NEG-US Glass Fiber includes the former PPG Glass Fiber business unit in the Americas, as well as Sales and Marketing resources that import products from other NEG locations.  The NEG acquisition of PPG’s US Glass Fiber operation was completed on September 1, 2017.  The US operation has been in existence since 1959 and includes three manufacturing sites in the Carolinas (Shelby, NC, Lexington, NC and Chester, SC).  There is also a Research & Development site in Shelby, NC and a Sales/Business office in the Pittsburgh area.  In total, NEG-US employs close to one thousand people in a wide variety of commercial, technical, manufacturing and business roles.

 

The Glass Fiber Division manufactures a range of thermoplastic and thermoset compatible direct roving and chopped strand products, along with continuous strand mat, multi-end roving and wet used chopped strands.  These products and NEG’s technical and commercial resources support a wide range of applications in the market – including transportation, wind energy, oil and gas piping, infrastructure and construction.  NEG’s glass fiber is used as the primary reinforcement in these applications.

Job Description

Title: Production Engineer – Binder/Sizing

Reporting to: Technical Manager

Location: Shelby, North Carolina

 

NEG-US is currently seeking a Production Engineer for all matters concerning day to day operations of the Chemical Binder/Sizing operations in the Shelby NC Fiber Glass Manufacturing Facility.

NEG-US Operations are under the Electric Glass Fiber America LLC.

 

Responsibilities and Requirements

  • Lead and assist with production and manufacturing of chemical binder/sizing materials via storage, mix process, transport, delivery, equipment maintenance and proper disposal of any unused or non-conforming materials.
  • Ensure compliance with all EH&S policies and procedures.
  • Achieve targeted production goals by ensuring that assigned production unit operate safely, at target rates, and within specifications.
  • Support manufacturing in analysis of glass production process disruptions and improvements on an as needed basis.
  • Supports product scale-up and works closely with others to commercialize products.
  • Identifies and communicates process improvement goals and objectives with respect to health, safety, and environmental concerns, unit operations, and technical opportunities.
  • The communications will be both internal and external and may require frequent evaluation and coordination with external technical staff.
  • Serve as point of contact with service groups and contractors to ensure production-related work is accomplished correctly, promptly, and cost-effectively.
  • Lead area specific team and product optimization / improvement projects.
  • Lead lean manufacturing initiatives in your production area. 
  • Ensures accurate accounting for production time gains / losses. Identifies and implements improvements to operational effectiveness and efficiency.
  • Identifies and addresses quality issues. Manages non-conforming materials, including root cause, rework, and action items.
  • Maintain accurate records, process metrics and documentation according to guidelines, and prepare both regular and special reports as needed
  • Perform regular walk-arounds and inspections to ensure good housekeeping, compliance, hazard recognition, etc.
  • Drive standardization, optimize unit costs, improve quality, and work closely with maintenance & production to ensure that work is completed promptly.

 

 

Qualifications and Credentials:

  • B.S. Degree in Engineering and/or Science required. – Strong emphasis on Chemical & Mechanical Engineering is preferred
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience as a production or process engineer in manufacturing is required.
  • Experience in glass manufacturing and/or chemical binder/sizing mixing equipment and procedures is strongly preferred.
  • Strong background in leadership, coaching and interpersonal skills are required.
    1. The successful candidate must be versatile and able to function as a manager, supervisor, and a team member.

 

This is a full-time position based in Shelby, NC
