As a Lead Data Scientist you will be responsible for providing analytical solutions to our claims department using predictive models understanding, prioritizing and addressing key business questions with data-driven insights.

This role will require someone who has general insurance knowledge, a great understanding of the claims process within P&C Insurance, ability to lead analytics projects from end to end and possess strong communication skills to “tell the story” to Central’s Claims Management team. Additionally, this individual will play a key role in ensuring that limited resources are targeted at the initiatives of highest strategic value across all the claims lines of business and that appropriate insights are shared across the business to eliminate duplication and re-work. Moreover, this individual will leverage work and build relationships using data and analytics to influence strategy and key functional decisions.


The broad focus of this position is three-fold:

  • Continuously monitor all metrics and trends and drive deep, creative, and rigorous analysis to thoroughly assess Claims performance. He/she must understand and explore a comprehensive suite of metrics that provide insight into all facets of the Claims and the line of business and serve as leading indicators of the operational health of the business.
  • Act as a lead to provide data and analytical support to Claims. He/she must maintain strong, collaborative working relationships with Central’s Claims Management team and effectively translate its analysis into actionable insights that can lead to operational and/or process improvements.
  • Identify and answer key strategic questions that will shape and define how Claims measures and runs the business. He/she must proactively and continuously define these questions and shape analysis around them potentially with incomplete information and garner buy-in from key stakeholders. 

Duties & Responsibilities include, but not limited to:

  • Facilitate prioritization of key business questions to be answered based on resources required and potential benefit.
  • Create innovative solutions (e.g. machine learning, computational linguistics, NLP, etc.) that can be embedded into our claims system to improve the operations of Central’s claim department while providing a great user experience along with high performance, quality and stability.
  • Develop and maintain NLP pipeline for Document Data Extractions semantics and sentiment processing and understanding
  • Translate business requirements into conceptual solutions that are shared with business  partners in a clear and concise format.
  • Assist with forecasting and claims strategy, ad hoc reporting and trend analytics
  • Mentor and lead junior data scientist/(s).


  • Master’s or PhD in Mathematics, Economics, Statistics or other quantitative fields.
  • 5+ years of professional experience as a data scientist or related roles working with large consumer datasets and third party data sources and  2+ years’ experience managing an analytical team.
  • 5+ years of experience using one of the following languages : Python, Java, R, Perl, Bash, or SQL.
  • Possess strong analytical, strategic, project management, decision-making and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communicator (written and verbal) with strong interpersonal skills and experience presenting to senior management teams
  • Highly proficient with MS Project, Excel, PowerPoint, and/or data visualization software (e.g. PowerBI, Tableau, etc.).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience working in or with Claims organizations.
  • Knowledge of ML frameworks such as Keras, TensorFlow, Pytorch, Scikit-Learn, XGboost, H2O etc.
  • Experience in text classification, topic modeling, setting up supervise and unsupervised learning NLP models including feature extraction, model selection and data cleaning.
