Position Summary:
 
Performs routine and emergency repairs to insure proper and safe operation of CAPSLO facilities. Performs building, plumbing, and equipment maintenance; janitorial services; and groundskeeping. Actual assigned duties may vary by location and particular work site needs. Priorities for special projects will be set with the assistance of the Facilities Supervisor and Program Director(s). Supports CAPSLO’s mission by performing a variety of facilities related tasks as needed to ensure safe operations and remain in compliance with regulations, as well as providing a comfortable environment for staff, children and clients.
 
Required Education and Experience:
  • Maintenance Technician I
    • One year recent experience in performing minor carpentry, plumbing, electrical repairs, building maintenance, janitorial, landscape maintenance or any combination of education, training or experience which will provide the required knowledge skills and abilities. 
    • Knowledge of operation of light equipment, hand tools and tools commonly used in maintenance and repair.
  • Maintenance Technician II
    • Minimum of two years general experience performing carpentry, plumbing, electrical repairs, building maintenance, janitorial, landscape maintenance or any combination of education, training or experience, which will provide the required knowledge skills and abilities.
    • Must be experienced in the operation of light equipment, hand tools and tools commonly used in maintenance and repair.
  • Maintenance Technician III
    • Minimum of three years general experience performing carpentry, plumbing, electrical repairs, building maintenance, janitorial, landscape maintenance or any combination of education, training or experience, which will provide the required knowledge skills and abilities. 
    • Must be experienced in the operation of light equipment, hand tools and tools commonly used in maintenance and repair.
Maintenance Technician Level I:
  • Essential Functions:
    • Makes minor repairs to buildings and equipment.
    • Performs grounds keeping year-round including; watering, lawn mowing, weeding, and cleaning of yard on a weekly or as needed basis.
    • Provides janitorial services to facilities, as needed. Janitorial duties include; sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, dusting, cleaning and sanitizing bathrooms, picking-up and emptying the trash, waxing floors, and shampooing rugs.
    • Cleans and maintains equipment and tools used on the job.
    • Maintains and purchases inventory of cleaning and gardening supplies.  
    • Picks up and disposes of trash and debris.
    • Performs Preventative Maintenance in accordance with Facilities Department Requirements.
    • Must use reasonable precautions in the performance of one’s duties and adhere to all applicable safety rules and practices; and act in such a manner as to assure at all times maximum safety to one’s self, fellow employees, clients and children.
    • Performs other duties as needed.
Maintenance Technician Level II:
Includes all Level I essential functions listed above plus the following:
  • Essential Functions:
    • Performs and/or schedules minor routine building and playground repairs to ensure proper and safe operation of facilities. 
    • Performs repairs, such as, light carpentry, painting, minor plumbing and center equipment.
    • Oversees, on occasion, part time employees in day-to-day maintenance and janitorial tasks.
    • Makes recommendations to supervisor or program director on major repairs and maintenance issues.
    • Provides, as necessary, direction to Maintenance Technician I.
Maintenance Technician Level III:
Includes all Level I and II essential functions listed above plus the following:
  • Essential Functions:
    • Schedules and performs all preventative maintenance of buildings, equipment and grounds. 
    • Schedule, train and supervise helpers (employers and clients) as needed.
    • May assist in overseeing and training clients or Maintenance Technicians I & II on day-to-day maintenance and janitorial tasks.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
 
Knowledge:
  • Must know how to read and work with drawings, sketches, and diagrams (for Maintenance Technician II & III).
Skills:
  • Must have strong verbal communication skills. 
Abilities:
  • Must be able to use hand tools, lawn mowers.
  • Must be able to work outdoors in all types of weather.
  • Must be able to work occasional evenings & weekends.
  • Must be able to work with a minimum of supervision (for Maintenance Technician II & III).
  • Must be able to relate well to all people of the community regardless of color, national origin, religion, sex, pregnancy, age, marital status, veteran status, sexual orientation, disability or socio-economic level.
Supervisory Responsibility:
  • Maintenance Technician Level II:
    • Oversees, on occasion, part time employees in day-to-day maintenance and janitorial tasks. This includes providing direction to Maintenance Technician Level I.
  • Maintenance Technician Level III:
    • Schedules, trains and supervises helpers (employers and clients), as needed. This includes assisting in overseeing and training clients or Maintenance Technicians I & II on day-to-day maintenance and janitorial tasks.
    • Janitorial tasks for this position should not be a regular duty, rather, infrequently on an emergency basis, due to the higher level of maintenance skills sets this position is designed to address. 
Work Environment:
  • Includes work outdoors in all types of weather. May be exposed to grass, plants, dust, and pollen.
Physical Demands:
  • The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
Physical
  • Position requires intermittent sitting, standing, walking, twisting, and bending. 
  • Must be able to lift up to 60 pounds. 
  • Grasping and hand manipulation required as well as reaching above and below shoulder level. 
  • Must be able to climb a ladder to access rooftops.
License & Certifications:
  • Must have dependable, insured transportation and valid California Driver’s License (mileage to be reimbursed) and acceptable driving record. A DMV printout and proof of insurance will be required.
Additional Eligibility Qualifications:
  • Must be at least 18 years of age by date of hire. 
  • Must submit proof of current vaccination status for measles, pertussis, and influenza (or a current, signed influenza declination form) in compliance with SB 792.
  • Must comply with the CAPSLO COVID-19 Vaccination Policy, either being fully vaccinated or have an approved exemption.
  • Must complete a health screening physical completed within 30 days prior to employment and a current TB skin test/Chest X-Ray. 
  • Employment is contingent upon meeting all job requirements and background requirements: criminal history check (Inclusive of DOJ, FBI and Child Abuse), acknowledgement of child abuse reporting responsibility, criminal record statement (Form LIC508), etc. A criminal history clearance is required prior to employment. 
  • Upon hire agency staff will check the Megan’s Law (or the current sexual predator website) to ensure each staff being hired is clear for employment. Program administrative staff will check the website annually to ensure all program staff are cleared to work. 
  • Must meet the Head Start Performance Standards and State requirements. 
  • Employment in Head Start, Early Head Start and Migrant and Seasonal Head Start Programs is contingent upon approval of the Policy Council.
