Wellness Health Educator

Position Summary:

Assists with the implementation of goals and objectives for the Teen Wellness Program. Supports CAPSLO’s mission by providing assistance to health programs for local teens.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Health Educator I: 
    • BA/BS degree in Social Science, Family Studies, Child Development, Health Education, Health Sciences, Psychology, or related field.
    • Experience working with adolescents preferred.
    • Experience in providing health education and public speaking preferred.
  • Health Educator II: 
    • BA/BS degree in Social Science, Family Studies, Child Development, Health Education, Health Sciences, Psychology, or related field.
    • Must have 1 year of on-the-job experience, proficiently fulfilling the Essential Functions of a Wellness Health Educator I.
  • Health Educator III: 
    • BA/BS degree in Social Science, Family Studies, Child Development, Health Education, Health Sciences, Psychology or related field.
    • Must have 1 years of on-the-job experience, proficiently fulfilling the Essential Functions of a Wellness Health Educator II.
    • Must have necessary health and/or fitness certifications accredited from a qualified and reputable agency as required by programs scope of work.

Preferred Education and Experience:                  

  • Experience in providing health education and public speaking preferred.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish preferred.

License & Certifications:

  • Must have a valid California Driver license, a reliable insured vehicle available for business use (mileage reimbursed) and acceptable driving record. A DMV printout and proof of insurance is required.

Essential Functions:

  • Wellness Health Educator I
    • Assists with the implementation of the goals and objectives for the Teen Wellness Programs.
    • Recruits and encourages students to participate in Teen Wellness activities and services.
    • Conducts wellness education for youth aged 13 to 18 in high school, middle school, and community settings. Topics may include and are not limited to reproductive health, mindfulness, nutrition, and/or physical activity.
    • Provides one-on-one health coaching to guide and support youth in achieving healthier lifestyles.
    • Discusses availability of free, confidential, teen-friendly FPACT services and provides referrals to other community resources, as appropriate.
    • Engages youth in program planning and implementation through the facilitation of school-based clubs and/or community workgroups.
    • Collects and enters data in Client Track, maintains accurate records, and assists supervisor in compiling data for reports.
    • Establishes relationships with community members, school staff, local businesses, volunteers, and the Department staff to assist in coordinating program activities.
    • Assists with program marketing, promotion, social media, special projects, and events.
    • Attends trainings and researches current and accurate health education information and issues affecting teen health.
    • Must use reasonable precautions in the performance of one’s duties and adhere to all applicable safety rules and practices, and act in such a manner as to assure at all times maximum safety to one’s self, fellow employees, clients and children.
    • Performs other duties as needed.
  • Health Educator II (Includes all Health Educator I essential functions, as listed above, and the following):
    • Serves on relevant networks and committees, as requested.
    • Collaborates with community members, school staff, local businesses, local clinics, health and fitness professionals, volunteers, and Health and Prevention Teen wellness staff to implement program activities.
    • Updates and revises program materials and curriculum as directed by the program supervisor.
    • Assists in the updating of websites, social media sites, and promotional materials.
    • Assists supervisor with the development and implementation of new projects and programs.
    • Assists with training program staff and/or school staff as requested.
    • Coordinates Teen Wellness team projects, meetings, and events as assigned.
    • Designs, orders, and monitors incentive items for distribution in classroom and community settings.
    • Develops and implements strategies for teaching youth and families how to advocate for their own health.
  • Health Educator III (Includes all Health Educator I & II essential functions, as listed above, and the following)
    • Participates in conferences and trainings, and/or earns certifications that directly support the program.
    • Develops and implements new projects and programs that enhance program capacity as directed by the program supervisor.
    • Collect, analyze, and summarize teen health data and develop presentations and educational materials to be used for teen health advocacy.
    • Designs and updates general health educator training manual and implements training of new health education staff, observes staff in conducting presentations for quality control.
    • Schedules, designs and conducts education staff meetings, as requested.
    • Co-researches and updates curriculum for medical accuracy and compliance with education code when needed.
    • Assists supervisor with coordinating and facilitating staff and community collaborative meetings.
    • Represents Teen Wellness at community collaborative meetings.
    • Assists in designing and delivering trainings for school teachers, administrators, and other youth-serving professionals on various teen health topics including LGBT Inclusivity, Youth Rights & Resources, and How to Be an Ask able Adult.
    • Assists in social media management as requested.
    • Co-organizes special events such as community forums.
    • Orders department educational materials and supplies as needed.
    • Participates in observations of wellness program staff
    • Assists with grant writing and reports as needed.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge

  • Must be computer literate and have word processing and publisher skills sufficient to input curriculum, evaluation tools, reports and promotional tools.

Skills

  • Must have good communication skills and be able to establish a good working rapport with students, teachers, health professionals, and co-workers.

Abilities

  • Must be able to work under minimum supervision.
  • Must be able to work flexible hours, some evenings, and occasional Saturdays.
  • Must be able to relate well to all people of the community regardless of color, national origin, religion, sex, pregnancy, age, marital status, veteran status, sexual orientation, disability or socio-economic level. 
  • Must be able to maintain confidentiality.
  • Must understand, uphold, and continue working toward accomplishing the mission, strategic goals and performance measures of the agency.

Supervisory Responsibility:

  • This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities.

Work Environment:

  • Requires working indoors in temperature-controlled environment with some exposure to copier and printer chemicals/fumes.

Physical Demands:

  • The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

Physical

  • Position requires intermittent sitting, standing, walking, twisting, and bending.
  • Must be able to lift 30 lbs. 
  • Simple grasping and hand manipulation required, as well as reaching above and below shoulder level.

Travel:

  • Local, state, and US travel will be required to attend meetings, trainings, and/or conferences.

Additional Eligibility Qualifications:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age by date of hire. 
  • Must comply with the CAPSLO COVID-19 Vaccination Policy, either being fully vaccinated or sign a COVID-19 vaccination declination form.
  • Based on program, a current TB skin test/Chest X-Ray may be required.
  • Employment is contingent upon meeting all applicable job requirements and background requirements. A criminal history clearance is required prior to employment.
  • Upon hire, agency staff will check the Megan’s Law (or the current sexual predator website) to ensure each staff being hired is clear for employment. Agency staff will check the website annually to ensure all program staff are cleared to work.
