POSITION

 

 

 

SUMMARY:

YMCA Cabin Leader is primarily responsible for the supervision, guidance, leadership, health and safety of a group of campers during both day camp and resident camp. Counselors plan and participate in all activities with their group to implement a stimulating, character driven program for all campers while providing a healthy and safe environment. This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Supervise a group of campers as an exceptional role model for youth.
  • Supervise a group of campers in resident camp cabin with a co-counselor.
  • Plan, develop, and implement program as assigned by Program Director or Camp Director.
  • Assist in camp-wide activities.
  • Facilitate campers’ involvement in camp programs. 
  • Facilitate friendships and friendship building skills among campers.
  • Utilize your skills to the fullest in delivery of camp goals and outcomes.
  • Create written responses as requested in camper development and program evaluation.
  • Create group and individual goals for each member of the group of campers.
  • Help individual campers adjust to group life by means of effective democratic group process.
  • Participate in staff meetings and regular supervisory conferences.
  • To be familiar with emergency procedures.
  • To be with assigned groups at all times and to constantly monitor all assigned campers unless relieved by appropriate staff person.
  • Assist specialists in their programming as assigned (i.e. Aquatics, Arts and Crafts, Nature, etc.).
  • To carry out other duties as deemed necessary by the Program Director or Camp Director to assure the overall success of the program.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be 18 years old and have one year of college or equivalent life experience.
  • High school diploma or equivalent work experience in the youth development field with camping skills.
  • Must work well with children for extended periods of time.
  • Must be able coexist and contribute in group living camping environment.
  • Should be concerned about our environment and living things in it.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Ability to stand, sit (including on the ground), and walk for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to plan, lead and participate in all physical activities
  • Ability to sit and stand from a seated position (including from the ground) when interacting with children.
  • Capability to be actively engaging with youth outdoors for the majority of the day.
