JOB SUMMARY: Energetics is seeking an early-to-mid-career engineer or scientist with specialized expertise in techno-economic analysis (TEA) and cost modeling for early-stage (pre-commercial) and very early-stage (laboratory-scale) technologies. In this position, the successful candidate will work closely with interdisciplinary teams to assess the potential for emerging industrial technologies at scale in a commercial marketplace. Technologies targeted in these analytical efforts will include those related to industrial decarbonization, energy-efficient manufacturing, use of renewable energy in manufacturing, sustainability, and the circular economy. The successful candidate will be an excellent communicator who is adept at communicating techno-economic and other research and analysis findings to non-experts. Excellent presentation and writing skills are desired for this role. The successful candidate will feel comfortable leading analytical efforts.

This position can be based in any of Energetics’ existing U.S. offices (Washington, D.C.; Columbia, MD; San Diego, CA; or Utica, NY), or anywhere in the United States as a remote telework position. Minimal travel (1-2 trips/year) will be expected. Candidate must be able to legally work in the United States.

  • Assess emerging technologies using a range of cost modeling and techno-economic analysis approaches, including exploration of cost drivers, sources of error and uncertainty, and assessment of the technology’s potential impact on a commercial marketplace.
  • Perform assessments of research portfolios and individual R&D projects, including market and technology assessments, economic benefits analyses, and energy/emissions benefits analyses.
  • Support and advise government clients with programmatic analysis and strategic planning.
  • Liaison between scientists at universities/laboratories and government decision-makers to assist in distilling key technical results and potential impacts from R&D.
  • Synthesize and clearly communicate results of analyses to colleagues and clients through formal and informal presentations and written technical communications (reports, white papers, fact sheets, briefings, journal articles, etc.).
  • Work closely with co-workers and clients in a fast-paced, collegial, and collaborative team environment (diligent and responsive contributor).
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

  • B.S., M.S., or Ph.D. degree in an engineering or scientific field and demonstrated skill in technology cost modeling for pre-commercial technologies. Candidates with an economics background (without an engineering degree) will also be considered if their experience includes cost modeling and analysis for industrial technologies and/or energy systems.
  • Intuitive understanding of the impact of production scale on techno-economics, and a keen understanding of the challenges and changes involved in the transition of a technology from a lab or pilot scale to a commercial scale.
  • A strong interest in pursuing work in the area of sustainable manufacturing, industrial decarbonization, and the clean energy transition.
  • Excellent communication skills, including strong technical writing skills and an ability to tailor written and verbal communications for technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office; advanced analytical and Excel skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to excel when working on self-managed tasks and as a member of a team.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making capabilities.
  • In compliance with Executive Order 14042, any successful applicant for this position must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or obtain an accommodation from the vaccination requirement based on disability or sincerely held religious belief, on or before the start date

  • Technical publications in the field of techno-economic analysis and cost modeling of emerging technologies, particularly those related to manufacturing or clean energy technologies.
  • Experience in analyzing manufacturing supply chains, material flows and sourcing, and sustainability/resiliency in supply chains.
  • Candidates with experience in energy systems modeling and environmental assessment techniques (including techniques such as life cycle assessment (LCA), environmentally extended input/output (EEIO) modeling, and carbon footprinting) are particularly encouraged to apply. While this is envisioned as a TEA-focused role, the successful candidate will work closely with LCA specialists to assess technologies and portfolios holistically. Candidates offering a combination of TEA and LCA experience will have an opportunity to combine and integrate work across both technical areas in this position.
  • Candidates with industry experience (including manufacturing process development, cost modeling, and scale-up) are particularly encouraged to apply.
