Summary

 

This position provides an opportunity for student(s) to get hands on experience working with district energy. This opportunity will allow an Intern to learn about end-to-end solutions combining heating and cooling systems, steam production, compressed air, vacuum, and power networks. This position is available to work up to (40hr) per week during the 2024 summer (May-August), depending on student availability. This is an hourly position reporting to the Operations & Maintenance Manager in Morgantown, WV.

 

Responsibilities

 

  • Ability and willingness to learn plant and distribution systems, operations, and maintenance activities.
  • Walk down plant systems and analyze Piping & Instrument Diagrams (P&ID’s).
  • Provide support as needed for plant & distribution performance optimization.
  • Perform any other duties and tasks as assigned by Supervisor.
  • Install, repair, troubleshoot, control, and maintain HP boilers, valves, traps, expansion joints, piping systems, auxiliary equipment, and distribution systems for local and remote facilities. Verify all equipment systems, pressure and temperatures are operating and maintained within limitations for the intended purpose.
  • Perform chemical analysis on boiler water samples as required.
  • Perform precision alignment and measurement.
  • Install mechanical seals, belts, couplings, and work with any hydraulic, pneumatic or city water system and related equipment.
  • Operate and regenerate cold-water zeolites to produce water for boiler operation.
  • Maintain logs of the various aspects of the plant’s operation as required.
  • Monitor equipment, identify problem areas, and develop problem resolution for equipment failures and out of ordinary conditions. Performs trouble shooting, prepares work permits and work orders in IBM Maximo.
  • Performs inspections, predictive and preventive maintenance and repairs on equipment including maintenance on valves, pumps, distribution system equipment etc.
  • Provide on-the-job training to new employees.
  • Plan, schedule and implement daily activities and identify and set priorities.
  • Communicate timely and relevant information to management, direct reports and others as situations necessitate.
  • Ensure task completion, operation efficiency and reliability for unit and corporate goals attainment.
  • Lock out equipment for maintenance, unlocks equipment and tests equipment after completion of repair following established Lock Out/Tag Out Permit Procedures.
  • Monitor and maintain the cleanliness of the plant and equipment.
  • Perform all work in accordance with established safety procedures which may include confined space entry.
  • Comply with all company policies and procedures and adhere to company standards.

 

 

Qualifications and Experience

 

  • Currently enrolled in a technical program.
  • Must be safety conscious, able to follow directions, and have a curious attitude.
  • Motivated and dynamic person with ability to work independently and part of a team.
  • Technically oriented
  • Self-starter, resourceful and proactive
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft suite of products and P&ID’s. AutoCAD experience / knowledge is a plus.
  • Requires time management, organization and prioritization capability and excellent communication and organizational skills.

 

Physical Requirements 

 

  • Must submit to company required pre-employment drug screen and physical exam.
  • The job can be physically demanding involving movement of heavy equipment and carrying materials up and down stairs, climbing in and out of confined spaces including manholes.
  • Candidates should be able to lift and maneuver a 50-lb load.
  • Ability to work in high noise level areas and wear noise reduction equipment for short periods of time.
  • Ability to work in areas of elevated temperatures for short periods of time.
