Summary

 

We seek a dedicated individual who will be responsible for the day-to-day activities within the Maintenance department.  The Maintenance Mechanic/Welder is responsible for performing various mechanical maintenance and repair work including the inspection and maintenance work required for rotating machinery and equipment.  This is a full-time, non-union, non-exempt position. This position works a 10 hour night shift on Sunday-Wednesday nights. The Maintenance Mechanic/Welder reports to the Maintenance Lead. This position is located at Kent County WTE in Grand Rapids, MI.

 

Responsibilities

 

  • Assist in the modification of existing or addition of new plant projects.
  • General plant welding.
  • May inspect, adjust alignment, replace or rebuild pumps, replace fan bearings, replace motors, repair screw conveyors, repair soot blowers, rebuild or change gearboxes, install and modify pipe lines, re-pack and repair valves.
  • Perform repairs to high pressure boiler wall and superheater tubes.
  • Install and modify pipelines and assist in the modification and addition of plant projects.
  • Must be able to work night shifts and available for overtime and call-in with short notice.
  • Upon acceptance of the position, the employee will be enrolled in a formal Maintenance Training program with deadlines and goals that are expected to be met as a condition of employment.

 

 

Qualifications and Experience

 

  • Minimum of three (3) years experience in in the repair and maintenance of mechanical equipment along with industrial stick welding.
  • A HS Diploma/GED required.
  • Formal technical or apprenticeship training is desired.  
  • Must be fluent in reading blueprints and P & ID's.  
  • Basic knowledge or experience in general rigging practices. Experience with basic maintenance shop equipment and boiler outages. 
  • Individual must be able to show the ability to stick, tig, and mig weld performing a weld test.
  • Qualified individual will be proficient in SMAW, GTAW, and GMAW weld procedures and certify under Vicinity’s D-1-1 (ASME Structural Welder) within 90 days of employment. Certification under Vicinity’s R-1 (ASME Code Welder) is required within one (1) year of employment.
  • Strong leadership and motivational skills as well as the ability to innovate and complete projects with little direct supervision is a must. 
  • Documentation of welding experience to include previous certifications are required.
  • Formal technical, military, and/or apprenticeship training is desired.
  • An understanding of hydraulic and pneumatic systems is required.
  • The Mechanic should be able to interpret mechanical drawings to assist in making repairs.
  • Prior safety training and hands on experience is a must.

 

Physical Requirements 

 

  • Must submit to a company provided physical and drug screening.
  • Must possess driver’s license in good standing in order to operate a company vehicle.
  • Full face respirator usage is required due to exposure to ash in working environment.
  • Work in close quarters and confined spaces.
  • Climb ladders and structures and ability to tolerate heights up to and including 100 feet. Must be able to work in a man lift and on open grating at this height.
  • Ability to tolerate high temperatures.
  • Ability to lift up to and including 50 pounds also required.
  • Work will include repairs to pressure parts and overlaying tubes while working in confined spaces and be able to work in extreme weather conditions and at heights.
