Job Summary

 

Performs computerized double-entry bookkeeping task requiring basic and advanced knowledge of the principles and practices of fund accounting in order to properly record and maintain precise fiscal records and financial data. Applies fundamental bookkeeping knowledge and skills to varied bookkeeping task such as posting, checking entries, issuing checks, balancing accounts, and preparing financial reports for assigned accounts; prepares and maintains financial records in an accurate, complete, and timely manner while ensuring the integrity, security, and accountability of Salvation Army financial accounts. Recommends financial actions by analyzing accounting options, assists in budget preparation, and reconciles financial discrepancies by collecting and analyzing account information. Prepares and ratifies hours and accruals for payroll processing.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

 

Knowledge of the basic concepts and principles of accounting, methods and procedures (especially fund accounting) in the performance of daily activities.  Knowledge of accounts payable, billing, accounts receivable, general ledger and banking transactions processes and functions.  Knowledge of the accounting and personnel terminology used within the accounting profession and within organization.  Ability to establish and maintain effective and efficient filing systems (both paper and electronic) for accounting documents and records.  Ability to analyze, prepare, code and enter basic financial transactions for entry into the General Ledger.  Ability to meet attendance requirements.  Ability to read, write, and communicate the English language.  Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.  Ability to demonstrate proficiency in word processing software (MS Word) and to demonstrate a high degree of proficiency in spreadsheet software (MS Excel) and database software (MS Access).  Ability to demonstrate proficiency with Great Plains (GP Dynamics 2010) or similar accounting software.  Ability to demonstrate proficiency in budgeting, tax preparation and financial reporting systems – client web services, preferred.  Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.  Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, interest and proportions to practical situations.  Ability to read and interpret documents such as contracts, lease and other agreements, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.  Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.  Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing to employees, internal and external customers of the organization.  Ability to operate various general office equipment including a computer and 10-key calculator.  Ability to effectively and efficiently work on multiple projects at the same time without becoming frustrated or disorganized.  Ability to concentrate and pay close attention to detail for up to 90% of work time when reading reports, preparing budgets, or researching financial transactions.  Ability to manage mental and visual fatigue due to sustained periods of concentration, working under pressure of deadlines and continual interruptions in concentration. 

 

Education and Experience

 

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Accounting AND Two years of experience with general ledger accounting, depreciation, reconciliation and advanced spreadsheet/database production

 

OR

 

Six years of equivalent combination of training and experience, which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

 

Knowledge of Great Plains (GP Dynamics 2010) preferred

 

Licenses and Certifications

 

Valid State Driver’s License

 

Physical Requirements

 

Duties are usually performed seated.  Sitting may be relieved by brief or occasional periods of standing or walking.  Limited amount of physical effort required associated with walking, standing, lifting, and carrying light objects (less than 25 lbs.) 5-10% of work time.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

 

Ability to travel to assigned Corps location as warranted. 

 

Working Conditions

 

Work is performed in a normal office environment where there are little or no physical discomforts associated with changes in weather or discomforts associated with noise, dust, dirt, and the like.
