Housing Monitor - Part Time - Lynchburg, VA

The Salvation Army, an internationally recognized non-profit, faith-based organization, has a job opening for a Part Time Housing Monitor position at the Lynchburg Corps, located in Lynchburg, Virginia.

Job Summary
Accepts and processes residents staying in shelter overnight; monitors the activity of residents on an assigned shift ensuring safety, security and compliance to house rules; maintains accurate and complete records and logs containing pertinent information; ensures that shelter is maintained in a neat and proper order. Monitors the behavior and activities of clients participating in a Salvation Army recovery/housing program; guards the security the safety of Salvation Army facilities and buildings to ensure compliance with housing rules and policies and to protect the safety of staff and clients. Assist with special events and seasonal programs, as requested.

Position works weekends Saturday/Sunday and Holidays. Additional shifts, and adjusted hours may be required based on business necessity.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of general office procedures and practices. Knowledge of basic recordkeeping practices and procedures. Ability to communicate effectively with clients in order to control, lead, and motivate behavior. Ability to work with the public encompassing all types of behaviors. Ability to work independently and with limited supervision while enforcing established policies and procedures. Knowledge of security practices and procedures. Ability to influence and reinforce positive behaviors from clients and deescalate tense situations involving clients. The ability to enforce program and house rules while maintain a calm demeanor and respect for the dignity of all persons. Ability to respond to emergencies in a calm and effective manner.

Education and Experience
High School Diploma or G.E.D. preferred but not required; one year experience working with the public performing security or social service work preferred, or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
Ability to meet attendance requirements. Ability to read, write, and communicate the English language. Ability to respond to emergency situations quickly and calmly while maintaining control and initiating the proper corrective action. Ability to perform combinations of sitting, standing, climbing stairs, and walking on a frequent change basis. Distance of travel is usually within the same building. Duties are performed seated or intermittently sitting, standing or stooping. Lifting of light objects (less than 25lbs) and occasional lifting of objects 25 to 50 pounds may be necessary.
