Food Services Supervisor
The Salvation Army, an internationally recognized non-profit, faith-based organization, has an opening for an Food Services Supervisor for the Southern Territory Headquarters, located in Atlanta, Georgia.
Supervises and participates in the work of kitchen staff by instructing and participating in the preparation, cooking and presentation of nutritional meals and snacks in accordance with established guidelines and schedules; coordinates the budget and billing of the same in an accurate manner. Supervises and participates in the cleaning of kitchen, dining hall, and Conference Center facilities, equipment, and appliances ensuring compliance with health standards. Maintains the schedule of the Conference Center and other Territorial Headquarter events requiring the preparation of meals. Monitors the inventory of kitchen supplies and food ensuring adequate levels of the same are maintained; orders appropriate levels, when necessary, based on meals scheduled. Supervises, trains, and instructs food service staff, temporary associates, and volunteers.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of the principles and practices of food preparation and management. Knowledge of proper cooking methods and procedures. Knowledge of meal planning techniques. Knowledge of acceptable food storage and cleaning techniques. Ability to operate a computer to prepare and track conference center records. Ability to gather data, compile information and prepare reports in MS Excel. Ability to lead, motivate, and monitor the work of co-workers. Ability to work well under the pressure of deadlines. Ability to cook nutritional, tasteful, and safe food for large groups in a timely manner. Ability to properly clean kitchen appliances and utensils. Ability to order food and kitchen supplies in an economical manner and to maintain an adequate level of inventory. Ability to develop effective working relationships with vendors and staff during all stages of event planning. Ability to ensure kitchen operations conform with local, state, and federal health regulations. Ability to meet attendance requirements. Ability to read, write, and communicate the English language. Ability to cook, taste, and smell food.
Education and Experience
High School Diploma or G.E.D., and Three years’ experience planning and cooking meals for large groups with experience working in a supervisory capacity, or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Certifications: ServSafe Certification within first six months of employment.
Physical Requirements/Working Conditions
Ability to safely lift 50 lbs. Duties are usually performed by frequent walking and/or standing, kneeling, or squatting relieved by lesser periods of sitting. Work is performed in a normal kitchen environment where there may be limited physical discomforts associated with working around hot stoves/ovens or cold freezers.
Special events serviced by the Conference Center may require working evening and/or weekend hours on an “as need” basis.
