The Salvation Army, an internationally recognized non-profit, faith-based organization, has a job opening for a full-time Executive Secretary (DYS) at its Divisional Headquarters located in Washington DC.
Under the general supervision of the Divisional Youth Secretary, the Executive Secretary manages logistical and program details related to Youth and Music events, councils, conferences, and camps and volunteers. The incumbent is also responsible for managing the day to day operations of the Youth Department to include but not limited: creating and maintaining a wide variety of documents, spreadsheets and reports; ordering office supplies; assisting in the creation and distribution of program brochures, flyers and related materials; assisting in the creation and maintenance of departmental volunteers files and records; coordinating office activities and events and maintaining the office calendar and leave requests. He/she will be required to travel to Camp Happy Land during the summer camp season and participate in activities and events as necessary.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of The Salvation Army mission and philosophy; basic Bible principles. Knowledge of general office practices and procedures; effective and efficient record keeping practices and procedures. Knowledge of basic accounting or bookkeeping practices and procedures including ability to prepare spreadsheets. Ability to conduct all activities of the position with a view to accomplishing the Army’s fundamental purpose of proclaiming Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord, which purpose must find expression in both the message proclaimed and the ministry of services performed. Ability to learn the broad scope of department operations and services to serve as an information resource and to provide assistance in a timely and effective manner. Ability to work on multiple projects effectively and efficiently at the same time without becoming frustrated or disorganized. Ability to gather, compile, and assemble information into a final product for letters, records, reports, etc. Ability to plan, organize, and prioritize work to accomplish work in compliance with quality standards and deadlines. Ability to determine the most effective and efficient method to accomplish work objectives and goals and to work under limited supervision. Ability to maintain an efficient and organized filing system to ensure that items can be retrieved in a timely manner. Ability to maintain the confidential nature of the department.
Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration or related field; and four years progressively responsible experience performing administrative work, preferably in a non-profit environment; demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft office products; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Licenses and Certifications
Valid State Driver's License.
Ability to meet attendance requirements. Ability to read, write, and communicate the English language. Ability to work on multiple projects effectively and efficiently at the same time without becoming frustrated or disorganized. Work is typically performed in an office environment, but some may require walking, standing, stooping, and lifting and carrying objects (less than 40 lbs.).
Work is performed in a normal office environment where there are little or no physical discomforts associated with changes in weather or discomforts associated with noise, dust, dirt, and the like. When at camp some work will include daily exposure to the sun and heat and varying environmental conditions and irregular hours.
