The Salvation Army, an internationally recognized non-profit, faith based organization, has a job opening for a full-time Area Command Finance Manager for Central Virginia working from the West Grace St., Richmond, VA location.
Under the general supervision of the Area Commander, the Finance Manager is responsible for supervising and managing the general accounting and financial statement reporting functions for Central Virginia Area Command (CVAC) proper; A/R Public Funds (ERAP, WAFF, EFSP, Pepco); A/P Journaling to Corps & CVAC (payroll, etc). He/she will ensure that Staff Accountants produce timely, accurate accounting data and financial reports in compliance with Salvation Army policy, public accounting standards and government laws and regulations. The incumbent will apply principles of accounting to analyze financial information, evaluates transactional data for accuracy and integrity; prepares financial reports for internal and external users. Accomplishes tasks with emphasis on customer service and seeks to add value for the organization’s executive management.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of the basic concepts and principles of accounting, methods and procedures (especially fund accounting) in the performance of daily activities. Knowledge of accounts payable, billing, accounts receivable, general ledger and banking transactions processes and functions. Knowledge of the accounting and personnel terminology used within the accounting profession and within organization. Knowledge of the principles and practices of personnel supervision.
Ability to establish and maintain effective and efficient filing systems (both paper and electronic) for accounting documents and records. Analytical ability to plan work schedules, evaluate work performances, and provide input on budget planning. Ability to examine the accounting work performed by subordinates in order to detect errors or omissions. Ability to effectively lead subordinates, resolve minor complaints, and deal with day to day occurrences. Ability to prepare complex financial reports and records. Ability to demonstrate proficiency with Great Plains (GP Dynamics 2010) or similar accounting software. Ability to demonstrate proficiency in budgeting, tax preparation and financial reporting systems – client web services, preferred. Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, interest and proportions to practical situations. Ability to read and interpret documents such as contracts, lease and other agreements, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
Proficiency in the use of fundraising software, Microsoft Office products to include: Databases and Spreadsheets, E-mail and Internet.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Accounting and three years of experience utilizing a computerized accounting system (Great Plains preferred) with exposure to double-entry fund accounting, financial analysis, audit, budget, and systems with advanced spreadsheet/database production, and 5 years of supervisory experience.
Any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS:
Valid Driver’s License is required.
Work is performed in a normal office environment where there are little or no physical discomforts associated with changes in weather or discomforts associated with noise, dust, dirt, and the like.
