The Salvation Army, an internationally recognized non-profit, faith-based organization, has an opening for a Disaster Training Program Coordinator, Curriculum Developer, Trainer for the Southern Territory Headquarters, located in Atlanta, Georgia.


Job Summary

This position manages The Salvation Army’s territorial disaster-training program.  Responsibilities include maintaining a standardized disaster training program curriculum; recruiting, training, and supporting instructors for disaster training program courses; coordinating the delivery of disaster training courses within the Southern territory; ensuring delivered courses are conducted in accordance with program standard and when completed, properly documented within the territory’s online database.  The position also acts as curriculum developer, building new course materials according to The Salvation Army’s standardized training template and acts the territory’s principal trainer, delivering course content in a classroom setting.  In addition, the position administers disaster training hosted on The Salvation Army online Learning Management System (LMS) and develops online training courses as required.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of principles and methods for curriculum and training design, and instruction for individuals and groups, and the measurement of training effects.  Knowledge of design techniques, tools, and principles involved in creating instructional material.  MUST be able to design presentations in Microsoft PowerPoint and develop long-form manuals in Microsoft Word.  Knowledge of effective methods for developing and conducting training seminars.  Ability to read, write, and communicate the English language.  Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar.  High writing proficiency is essential.  Knowledge of the principles and practices of disaster management.    Knowledge of the principles and practices of project management.  Knowledge of modern graphic design techniques.  Ability to develop, design, or create new ideas, relationships, systems, or products, including artistic contributions  Ability to select and use training/instructional methods and procedures appropriate for the situation when learning or teaching new ideas Ability to identify the educational needs of others, and developing formal educational or training programs or classes, and instructing others.     Ability to read and understand information and ideas presented in writing. Ability to communicate information and ideas in writing so others will understand.


Education and Experience

Bachelor’s Degree in a related field from an accredited college or university,   And Two years’ experience in curriculum development, educational design, or training preferably in Emergency Management Services.    Or  Any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.    

Licenses & Certifications:

  • Valid State Driver’s License
  • Certified as Salvation Army authorized disaster instructor (must be earned within six months of hire)
  • Certified as Salvation Army Safe-From-Harm instructor (must be earned within six months of hire)
  • Certified as ServSafe Food Safety Exam Proctor (must be earned within six months of hire)
  • Certified as Medic First Aid first aid instructor (must be earned within one year of hire)

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions   

Ability to travel (car/air) overnight and several days in sequence to support training program delivery, course testing, and meetings/conferences frequently.    Position is in emergency management and on-call at all times in case of emergencies.  Vacation time is restricted from August 15 through September 31 during peak of Atlantic hurricane season.  Must be deployable during a disaster incident to support emergency operations for a minimum of 14 days and work extended hours.    Work is performed in a normal office environment where there are little or no physical discomforts associated with changes in weather or discomforts associated with noise, dust, dirt, and the like.  During a disaster incident, this position may be deployed to support on-site disaster relief operations.  This may include operating in “hardship conditions” where basic amenities, such as power and water, may not be readily available.  Working conditions during a disaster operation may be extremely hectic and stressful.
