The Salvation Army, an internationally recognized non-profit, faith-based organization, has an opening for an Disaster Operations & Deployment Manager for the Southern Territory Headquarters, located in Atlanta, Georgia.


Job Summary

This position supports The Salvation Army’s territorial disaster services coordinator in managing disaster response operations, supervising personnel deployments during catastrophic events, and serves as a technical resource for the development of disaster volunteers.  The position assists the territorial disaster coordinator in monitoring potential/active disaster hazards and ensures the effective dissemination of critical information during emergency incidents.  The position acts as project manager for outstanding EDS-related initiatives, fleet manager for EDS mobile and specialized equipment.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Ability to read, write, and communicate the English language.  Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar.  MUST be able to prepare clear and concise reports, correspondence and other written materials.    Knowledge of the principles and practices of disaster management.    Knowledge of the principles and practices of project management.  Ability to communicate information and ideas in writing so others will understand.  Ability to read and understand information and ideas presented in writing.  Effective public speaker, able to deliver both formal and informal presentations, including platform instruction of standardized training material.


Education and Experience

Bachelor’s Degree in a related field from an accredited college or university,   And   Two years’ experience in, , Emergency Management Services.    Or  Any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.   


Licenses & Certifications: 

  • Valid State Driver’s License 
  • Certified as Salvation Army authorized disaster instructor (must be earned within six months of hire)  
  • Certified as Salvation Army Safe-From-Harm instructor (must be earned within six months of hire)  
  • Certified as ServSafe Food Safety Exam Instructor/Proctor (must be earned within one year of hire)  
  • Certified as Medic First Aid first aid instructor (must be earned within one year of hire) 
  • Certified Emergency Manager (AEM/CEM) designation (must be earned within two years of hire)

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions   

Ability to travel (car/air) overnight and several days in sequence to support disaster operations/training and to attend meetings/conferences frequently.  Position is in emergency management and on-call at all times in case of emergencies.  Vacation time is restricted from August 15 through September 31 during peak of Atlantic hurricane season.  Must be deployable during a disaster incident to support emergency operations for a minimum of 14 days and work extended hours.    Work is performed in a normal office environment where there are little or no physical discomforts associated with changes in weather or discomforts associated with noise, dust, dirt, and the like.  During a disaster incident, this position may be deployed to support on-site disaster relief operations.  This may include operating in “hardship conditions” where basic amenities, such as power and water, may not be readily available.  Working conditions during a disaster operation may be extremely hectic and stressful.
