The Salvation Army, an internationally recognized non-profit, faith-based organization, has a job opening for a Education Tutor forthe Social Service Towers located in Jacksonville, Florida.


 


Job Summary:


 



  • Assists, instructs, and evaluates children in the academic areas in which they are weak so they may better understand and perform the skills; confers directly with the student’s teacher and parents regarding the student’s progress; conducts individual and group tutoring sessions with students from pages t-18; prepares various reports documenting the students progress and shares the same with parents.

  • Utilizes educational tools (flashcards, charts, educational games, worksheets, textbooks, etc.) in order to explain, teach and/or review educational skills according to the needs of the students (individually or in small groups).

  • session; obtains diagnostic test results from teachers if available.

  • Confers with the student's classroom teacher, parents, and Director to plan an individualized program for each child through conferences and meetings.

  • Schedules consultation time with classroom teachers to coordinate remedial efforts and monitor on-going progress of students; records and logs a summary of the information learned.

  • Maintains an accurate log of methods and materials utilized at each tutoring session along with evaluative comments.

  • Schedules conference time with parents to discuss the student's academic development and progress.

  • Prepares and provides bi-weekly, mid-term, and a final report of each student for parents; prepares and provides an end-of-the-month report of the tutoring program for immediate supervisor.

  • Prepares a weekly absence sheet for the Case Manager.

  • Responsible for recording and maintaining child portfolios to include information that documents their growth and development

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:


 


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:


Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Education, or a related field



and



One year experience teaching school aged children basic academics



Or The equivalency to an early childhood associate degree defined as an associate’s degree in any discipline with at least 30 hours in early childhood


education, child development, elementary education, or early childhood special education.


 


LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS:


 



  • Valid state driver’s license


 


OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES:



  • Utilizes community resources to further help students develop academic skills.

  • Performs other related work as required.


 


 


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities


 



  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of childhood education (elementary through senior high school) to include childhood centers.

  • Knowledge of effective education tools and techniques for diverse children, at risk children, and their families

  • Knowledge of appropriate practices that impact learning and create an inclusive classroom.

  • Knowledge of the Privacy Act of 1974, 5 U.S.C 552a

  • Ability to instruct, lead and motivate children in educational environments.

  • Ability to evaluate students’ progress and determine student's strengths and weaknesses.

  • Ability to customize tutoring sessions to students needs utilizing innovative and accepted practices.

  • Ability to build and maintain effective working relationships with teachers, students, and parents.

  • Ability to recognize, understand, and attempt to overcome characteristics of dysfunctional families.

  • Ability to monitor, influence, control and evaluate the assistance provided by a Tutor A


 


MENTAL AND PHYSICAL ABILITIES:


 



  • Ability to meet attendance requirements.

  • Ability to read, write and communicate the English language.

  • Ability to travel to student's schools to meet with teachers.

  • Moderate mobility:duties are usually performed by combinations of sitting, standing, and walking on a frequent change basis, lifting and carrying light objects (less than 25 lbs.)

WORKING CONDITIONS:


 


Works is performed in a normal classroom or office environment where there are little or no physical discomforts associated with changes in weather or discomforts associated with noise, dust, dirt, and the like.


 


Work requires occasional travel to schools which may involve exposure to changes in weather and/or heavy traffic
