The Salvation Army, an internationally recognized non-profit, faith-based organization, has a temporary job opening for a Camp Lifeguard for Camp Hidden Lake in Lexington, Mississippi.

 

Job Summary:

Serves as a lifeguard for all camp waterfront operations; provides constant surveillance of waterfront activities; maintains the cleanliness of the pool and pool area; monitors and controls the chemical levels of pool water ensuring proper levels are maintained at all times; prepares pool records in a accurate and complete manner; supervises swimming competitions.

 

Essential Functions:

Supervises waterfront activities to include swimming, boating, canoeing, etc. Promotes a program setting that ensures the health and safety of campers. Contributes to a creation of the overall camp’s climate for child and youth development. Guards the safety of swimmers by providing constant surveillance of the entire waterfront area. Directs and supervises the behavior of all swimmers to ensure compliance with pool safety rules. Provides emergency lifesaving assistance to troubled or drowning swimmers; performs lifesaving C.P.R. and first aid in accordance with certified practices and procedures; contacts emergency medical assistance when needed; stays with victims until emergency medical assistance takes over care of victim. Assesses changes in weather and responds appropriately and in cooperation with established camp guidelines for waterfront evacuation, guides campers in a calm and orderly manner. Assists in maintaining the cleanliness of the pool water; vacuums bottom of pool surface; scrubs side walls; back washes filter system; checks filter gauges and regulates water level and temperature of pool. Tests the pool water Ph level, chlorine level and Bromine level as scheduled in order to ensure correct chemical balance of pool water; dispenses chemicals into the pool as needed; ensures the safety of all swimmers. Assists in maintaining neatness and cleanliness of waterfront area; collects and disposes of trash.

 

Performs other duties as assigned.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of life saving techniques. Knowledge of the principles and practices of child and youth behavior and development. Knowledge of proper pool management. Ability to supervise swimmers and provide constant surveillance of pool activities in order to ensure swimmer safety and to respond to emergency rescue when needed. Ability to perform live saving techniques, C.P.R. and first aid procedures in emergency situations. Ability to enforce all pool rules. Ability to build and maintain effective mentor relationships with children and youth. Ability to communicate effectively with campers and camp staff. Ability to test and adjust pool water to ensure the proper chemical balance as well as the safety of the swimmers. Ability to prepare and maintain up-to-date pool records.

 

Education and Experience

High School Diploma or G.E.D. (or 19 years of age)

 

And

 

Six months experience working as a life guard,

 

Or

 

Any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

 

Licenses and Certifications

Life Saving Certification

 

C.P.R. and First Aid Certification

 

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

Ability to swim and perform lifesaving activities. Work is performed in a normal camp environment where there may be physical discomforts associated with changes in weather or discomforts associated with noise, dust, dirt, and the like.

 

Additional Information

Camp Staff Orientation will be held 06/14/2024 – 06/16/2024 and participation is required.

 

The 2023 Summer Camp program will be held 06/17/2024 – 07/20/2024.

Compensation: $250/week
