THE SALVATION ARMY JOB DESCRIPTION

 

Job Summary:

 

Assists store customers in donating, selecting, and purchasing store items; operates and maintains a cash register; responds is customers’ questions; maintains the cleanliness and orderliness of the store displays; ensures the security of store items and the cash register.

 

Essential Functions:

Store Clerk: (60%)

 

Assists customers purchasing items from The Salvation Army by ringing-up sales utilizing a cash register; collects monies, counts change, and prepares receipts; prepares and packages purchased items; prepares and balances the cash drawer and runs routine register printouts; prepares and delivers bank deposits; ensures the security and accountability of all cash register funds and sales records by established operating procedures.

 

Prepares, processes, and maintains various sales records, tax forms, and social service vouchers; prepares routine sales reports as directed; maintains the neatness and security of the cash register area; ensures that documents, bags, etc., are adequately stocked.

 

Ensures the store displays are correctly prepared and maintained; supervises and participates in the rotation and rearranges of stock as directed; ensures that all items are returned to the proper location after customers have handled them.

 

Assists customers by explaining store policy and responding to questions regarding the pricing and/or purchasing of items; ensures that all customers visiting the store have a pleasant experience.

 

Assists customers donating items to The Salvation Army; directs customers to the proper loading/unloading area; may help haul donations to the storage area; prepares and provides tax receipts as needed.

 

Answers the store telephone tactfully and courteously; assists customers by responding to questions and providing directions and general information; may schedule and record donation pick-ups.

 

Opens and closes store doors to the store schedule.

 

Sorter: (40%)

 

Receives, inspects, and sorts donated items such as clothes, shoes, household items, bric-a-brac, etc.

 

Assists in pricing and tagging items.

 

Bails clothes,

 

Empties Drop Boxes.

 

Assists in pricing and tagging items in the store by established procedures.

 

Assists customers in carrying purchased/donated items in/out of the store.

 

Assists in disaster relief projects as needed.

 

Cleans all display racks and shelves; sweeps and mops floors; cleans windows and mirrors; ensures that the store is maintained cleanly and invitingly.

 

Performs other related work as required.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

 

Education and Experience

 

High school diplomas or G.E.D. and experience working in a retail store preferred,

 

or

 

Any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

 

Certifications/Licenses:

 

None

 

Materials and Equipment:

 

Cash Register, General Office Equipment; copier, fax

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

 

Knowledge of effective customer service techniques.

 

Knowledge of the principles and practices of basic mathematics.

 

Knowledge of effective and efficient warehouse operations.

 

Ability to lead, motivate and evaluate the work of co-workers.

 

Ability to determine the suitability and appropriate pricing of donated items.

 

Ability to ensure the warehouse area and equipment are maintained neat and orderly.

 

Ability to lead and motivate employees in performing work assignments.

 

Ability to work effectively and cooperatively with coworkers, customers, and donators.

                           

Physical Requirements:

 

Ability to meet attendance requirements.

 

Ability to read, write, and communicate in the English language.

 

Ability to operate a cash register.

 

Work requires the ability to lift and carry and/or push/pull (25 -50 lbs.) materials, supplies, and equipment. Moderate mobility: duties are usually performed by combinations of standing, walking, and primarily sitting.

 

Working Conditions:

 

Work is performed in a regular store environment where there are little or no physical discomforts associated with changes in weather.
