Addis Production/Utilities Engineer
The role of Production/Utilities Engineer focuses not only on improving the process of carbon black production from a utilities perspective, but will also focus on product and economic innovation strategies for our ancillary product line (e.g. Cogeneration energy, acid production, etc.) The Production/Utilities Engineer works collaboratively with various management and production level employees to ensure proper production operation in response to emerging technology as well as the efficient usage and repurposing of production by-products.
Essential Functions
- Maintain intricate knowledge, practices, principles, operation procedures of the following systems and related equipment:
-Cogeneration
-Steam production
-Sulfuric Oxide Nitrous Oxide
-Acid production
- Evaluate, recommend, and assist in the formulation and strategic implementation of local plant production improvement needs, appropriate utilities usage and conservation as well as sulfuric oxide/nitrous oxide emissions monitoring and commercial byproduct utilization
- Lead and manage various projects (i.e. new and continual process improvement initiatives, safety and compliance reviews, byproduct innovation, etc.) and teams as well as present data and reports to senior colleagues and management
- Research, design, modify or develop new or existing plant equipment within the realms of production improvement & efficiencies, utility usage efficiency and effectiveness, regulatory compliance and environmental and safety programs including design and conduction of improvement trials
- Monitor manufacturing equipment, including regular testing and ensure maintenance tasks are performed proactively, routinely and appropriately
- Complete documentation to show and ensure compliance with both internal and external regulations and protocols (i.e. Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s); System Organization Controls (SOC’s) and Statistical Process Controls (SPC’s)) as well as review field analysis notes on plant production, cogeneration and utilities centered engineering projects
- Ensure continual review and oversight over the production process and equipment with a perpetual goal of maintaining production line optimization, plant utility reliability as well as ensuring product/byproduct quality while ensuring both high efficiency and quality
- Review, research and analyze all system processes to identify faults, critical weaknesses, or potential issues and develop articulate plans to address the needs efficiently and effectively
- Assist various locations and departments in troubleshooting problems, issues, defects and production limitations within the production process cycle, cogeneration, scrubbing units including providing data and cost/benefit analysis and recommendations
- Create, update and distribute scheduled and ad hoc reports/working documents including but not limited to:
-Cogeneration scrubber compliance
-Acid production performance
-Production/Process efficiency and improvement tracking
-New innovations and emerging technology
- Data collection, interpretation and strategy planning with respect to:
-Production cost analysis
-Process capability and byproduct evaluation
-Emission Reduction and rework evaluation and analysis
-Energy and utility conservation and utilization efficiency
- Develop, review, oversee, track and/or manage all expenses associated with carbon black production units, cogeneration, plant utility areas and scrubber systems
- Maintain fluid connection with operational team(s) to ensure production scheduling is accurate, timely and appropriate for grade and product requirements/changes
- Train personnel on new equipment and processes to ensure complete understanding and knowledge on ongoing procedures and processes
- Assist EHS department with risk assessments of the equipment and processes being used to address staff safety and safety within the plant, in addition to any environmental impact
- Collaborate with hazardous operations teams to complete and process safety reviews
- Use simulation software in the development of new products and processes
- Collaborate with Engineering (local and Corporate) to maintain and update location system drawings and technical specifications including but not limited to machinery schematics, and production and cogeneration drawings
- Ensure all programs and processes meet or exceed internal and external (regulatory) standards with respect to the production, Cogeneration and SNOX emission processes. This includes but is not limited to:
-Energy efficiency checks
-Emission reduction review and evaluation
- Other duties as assigned by supervisor
Required Education and Experience
- BS Chemical or Mechanical Engineering Degree; or equivalent experience in a carbon black / co-gen plant and/or Sulfur Oxide and Nitrous oxide reduction discipline.
- Intermediate skill level using personal computers and general office administration software
- Intermediate skill level applying positive and proactive supervisory/management practices
- Solid time and project management skills with demonstrated implementation success
- Effective communicator, both oral and written
Preferred Education and Experience
- Preferred experience in Electrical Power Plant and Sulfur Oxide and Nitrous oxide reduction processes.
- Preferred experience in Carbon Black Manufacturing
- Ability to lead and train other employees preferred
- Preferred knowledge of carbon black manufacturing technology and the effects of carbon black properties on the end use of the product in rubber and plastics.
- Preferred knowledge of statistical process control (SPC) and statistical analysis of data.
- Prefer 5 -6 years’ experience in carbon black industry or SNox reduction.
- Prefer 5 years’ experience in a manufacturing organization.
- Ability to use a variety of software is preferred (ex: the Microsoft suite of Office products, DELTA-V DCS, and ASPEN Tech/IP21 data historian).
