Position Summary:

As a Lab Supervisor, you will oversee a team of phlebotomists responsible for performing venipuncture, collecting lab specimens, and conducting CLIA waived tests on point of care equipment. Your role is crucial in maintaining the efficient operation of San Ysidro Health laboratories and client locations. You will inspire and develop your team while ensuring high-quality service. In addition, you will oversee lab tracking, order resolution, denial resolution, perform annual evaluations, and conduct competency testing.

 

Essential Functions of the Job:

  • Supervise and guide phlebotomists, ensuring adherence to protocols and maintaining high-quality specimen collection and testing.
  • Prioritize patient safety, comfort, and accurate specimen collection during venipuncture procedures.
  • Implement effective systems to monitor the collection, transportation, and tracking of lab specimens.
  • Resolve order-related issues promptly and accurately to ensure timely lab order processing.
  • Oversee collaboration with providers and stakeholders to resolve denial issues and ensure appropriate reimbursement.
  • Conduct annual evaluations, providing feedback and identifying growth opportunities for phlebotomists.
  • Administer competency testing to maintain required skills and knowledge.
  • Foster a positive work environment, promoting teamwork and effective communication.
  • Stay updated on industry advancements, regulations, and best practices in phlebotomy and lab operations.
  • Collaborate with other departments to streamline processes, resolve issues, and ensure smooth laboratory operations.

 

Additional Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Present status reports on operations, corporate compliance, and quality management to the management team.
  • Occasionally demonstrate best practices and performance expectations to laboratory staff.
  • Demonstrate strong knowledge of venipuncture procedures, specimen collection, and point of care testing.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in using laboratory information systems and other relevant software applications.
  • Promote a culture of exceptional customer service, addressing patient and client concerns professionally and effectively.
  • Maintain compliance with relevant regulations, including CLIA, HIPAA, and OSHA.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.

 

Job Requirements


Experience Required:

  • 3 years’ proven experience in related healthcare leadership role, demonstrating effective team management and development.
  • Previous experience as a phlebotomist, preferably in a clinical or healthcare setting

 

Education Required:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent

 

Certifications Required:

  • Phlebotomy Certification – Current California State Phlebotomy Licensure
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers
  • Current and valid CA Driver’s License & Vehicle Insurance

 

Verbal and Written Skills Required to Perform the Job:

  • Good oral and written communication skills.
  • Provides positive customer service skills; is an active listener and provides support and guidance to others.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) or (English/Tagalog or Arabic or Chaldean) strongly preferred.

 

Technical Knowledge and Skills Required to Perform the Job:

  • Ability to perform phlebotomy
  • Knowledge of medical terminology and basic computer skills required.
  • Experience and knowledge with Microsoft Office software
  • Superb organizational ability and exceptionally analytical.

 

Equipment Used:

  • Various Lab testing equipment and materials, phlebotomy instruments, computers, phones, copy machines and fax machines.

 

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:

  • Exposed to odorous chemicals and specimens subject to varying and unpredictable situations; Working around lab equipment such as centrifuge and office equipment
  • Wearing protective personal equipment such as gloves, face shield, lab coats, goggles
  • Exposed to infection from disease-bearing specimens and patients
  • Frequent prolonged standing/walking; lifting 0-20 lbs.; carrying 0-20 lbs.; bending, kneeling, climbing, pulling 0-10 lbs.; repetitive use of hands, sample grasping, reaching body and hand twisting
  • Occasionally subjected to irregular hours including weekends and/or evenings; Driving from one clinic to another clinic

 

Universal Requirements:

Pre-employment requirements include I-9, physical, positive background and reference check results, complete application, new hire orientation, pre-employment PPDs. Compliance with all mandated vaccinations and all boosters is a term and condition of employment.
