This position is for a Summer Safety Intern with a tentative start date of Monday, May 22, 2023.

DESCRIPTION SUMMARY
Provide support to the plant security, health, and safety department, conducting an in-depth analysis of the safety policies and procedures across the company. Review, identify, and develop corrective actions for SugarCreek’s Hazardous Communication (HazCom) Program and work cooperatively with plant personnel to implement a digital Safety Data Sheet (SDS) HazCom program.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES

  • Review current HazCom policies and procedures.
  • Conduct an audit with the manufacturing plant to assess their current SDS status and program.
  • Identify areas for improvement within the HazCom program.
  • Conduct an inventory of all hazardous materials within the SugarCreek location and create a master list.
  • Develop an electronic SDS program within our HazCom management software.
  • Participate in SugarCreek Internship Program and coordinate with other departments as needed.
  • Comply with federal, state, and company policies, procedures, and regulations.
  • Support all safety, food quality, and sanitation initiatives and policies.
  • Follow Sugar Creek Packing Co. safety rules and procedures.
  • Perform other duties and tasks as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education: Enrolled in a bachelor’s degree-seeking program in Occupational Health and Safety, Business, or another related field.
Experience: None.
Certification or Licensure Requirements: None.

ABILITIES, KNOWLEDGE, AND SKILLS REQUIRED
  • Possess knowledge and passion for the food industry.
  • Possess proficiency with computer programs, specifically Microsoft Office.
  • Able to plan, organize, and manage time effectively.
  • Possess basic mathematic skills, specifically in arithmetic and algebra.
  • Able to write and communicate effectively.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS
No unusual physical requirements. Physical requirements are consistent with manufacturing-type office positions, including mostly sitting with some standing/walking required. Other light physical activities like using stairs or occasionally moving items weighing less than 15lbs may be required as needed. Some travel may be required in between plants.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
Some travel is required.
 
Some work is performed in a comfortable indoor, office-like facility. Some work is performed in an indoor, manufacturing facility with proximity to heavy and hazardous machinery. Some departments are colder temperatures between 30° and 40° F. Safety wear is required in manufacturing areas, including hard hat, hairnet, hearing protection, safety glasses, steel toe boots, coats, and other necessary equipment.
