Are you interested in pursuing a job in railcar repair and have some great experience?  Savage’s railcar repair team in our customers facility in Blaine, WA , is looking for Railroad Carman. The successful candidate will to rebuild, repair, and inspect railway cars according to AAR, FRA, and company regulations.  You will use a mix of hand tools, power tools, instruments, and other equipment to safely and efficiently perform light or medium repairs on railcars. 
 

Pay Range:$24 to $26 pe Hour

Here is what you will be doing
 

  • Responsible for the daily required volume of railcar repairs, with safe associated railcar movement in the entire yard 
  • Will prepare necessary reports and forms.  These could include bad-order forms and records of billable repairs
  • Responsible for ensuring all repairs over a given dollar threshold are estimated and approved by the railcar fleet owner before proceeding with the repair
  • Ensure compliance with all AAR and FRA standards, abide by Savage’s railcar repair quality control program
  • Will perform both scheduled and on-demand maintenance
  • Will provide repairs for primarily “Jumbo” hopper cars along with general purpose tank cars and pressurized tank cars – will not be asked to perform repairs on actively leaking cars with hazardous materials contained
  • Monitoring all repairs and supplies consumed for accurate inventory and billing to railcar fleet owners
  • Will work with two to four other crew members to safely perform railcar repairs and movements
  • Will assist in providing front-line compliance with Operation Clean Sweep and Savage 5S cleanliness and orderliness standards
  • Will perform or assist in re-railing activities as needed
  • Will operate forklifts, light cranes and a locomotive or railcar mover – Savage will provide and expect training and certification
  • Will work a 5-day a week schedule with 8-10 hour days the normal expected schedule, significant overtime or weekend work will be required on an exception basis
  • Will work with and support logistics or admin coordinators in their pursuit of billing for railcar repairs 

Requirements of a successful Rail Carman

  • Welding certification; need to be able to pass AWS Welding bend test (3 positions)
  • Journeyman carman experience desired but not required
  • TWIC credentials or ability to obtain TWIC credentials required
  • Familiarity with removing, repairing, and replacing defective components including wheels, safety appliances, truck and brake equipment, couplers, yokes, draft gears, and air brake valves
  • The ability to weld proficiently to secure new parts or repair damaged parts
  • Ability to work at heights (with provided fall protection), on uneven terrain, and in confined spaces
  • A willingness to complete any assigned task(s) as long as they have been properly trained or are properly certified
  • Familiarity with bubble leak testing and a level 2 certification
  • Experience with touch up paint and lining application
  • A desire to learn the skills necessary to do the job safely and in a way that adds value to the Customer’s operation and exceeds their expectations
  • Ability to complete basic data entry tasks in a computer or logbook
  • Can read, write, and understand English
  • Able to follow written and/or verbal instructions with minimal supervision
  • Dependable and shows up on time and prepared for scheduled work shifts
  • Willing to wear required PPE
  • Conducts themselves in a professional manner at all times
  • Works safely at all times
  • Pass drug / alcohol test / criminal background check required for onboarding
  • The desire to treat and be treated fair
  • The ability to anticipate and think ahead
  • Should also have the ability to use hand and power tools proficiently
  • High School Graduate or GED equivalent
  • Savage is an awarded Military-friendly employer – previous military experience with ability to work on a team and follow procedures is a plus 

Here are some of the physical requirements of this role

  • Railcar repair crews will work both indoors and outdoors every day and as a result will be exposed to the elements.  Over half the time work will be in a covered area.
  • Railcar repairmen must be physically able to do the following:
    • Climb on and off railcars and locomotives safely
    • Operate railcar hand brakes
    • Operate rail switches
  • Must have the ability to work, walk, and stand on uneven ballast surfaces for long periods of time
  • Ability to lift up to 75 lbs.
