Job purpose

 

To be responsible for planning, establishing, implementing, and maintaining a variety of health, safety and environmental programs to assure the highest possible degree of safety for all employees.

 

Duties and responsibilities

 

  • Support Corporate EHS Director in ensuring EHS culture is adopted appropriately throughout the facility by practicing safe working techniques and re-enforcing the safety policies, guidelines and procedures as set forth by the Company, maintaining filing systems as required, posting EHS required information (i.e., Compliance Calendar for EHS, maintenance & quality), purchasing of all required safety items, and maintaining working relationships with Regulatory Agencies and other SSAB locations
  • Interface professionally with company employees, customers, medical providers, government officials, and the public in all areas relating to the environment, health, safety, projects and quality
  • Advise, develop and maintain expert knowledge of existing and proposed regulations, laws & reporting requirements (i.e., Federal, State, Provincial, Local regulations); to include maintaining and organizing documentation demonstrating compliance with established permits, laws (i.e., Federal, State, Provincial, Local) and company objectives
  • Conduct and coordinate regular audits demonstrating environmental and safety compliance at the facility; to include, ensuring that contract personnel working on the property are in compliance with Company Policy & Safety requirements, maintaining & updating SOP’s for all safe work practices & equipment, and utilizing them in day-to-day training
  • Lead effective root cause analysis of incidents; to include, monitoring lost-time injuries/illnesses, worker’s compensation claims, conducting accident/injury investigations & illness exposure monitoring, evaluating risks, developing & implementing plans to correct &/or prevent losses, audit safety plans to ensure effectiveness, establishing & monitoring a program for reporting & investigating “near miss” situations, and conducting investigations into employee inquiries, suggestions & complaints, and monitoring corrective actions
  • Provide training in all areas relating to EHS to all employees; to include, but not limited to, weekly toolbox talks, safety videos, monthly/quarterly safety training, site training, employee orientations, emergency response training, and all other specifically required training; to include, maintaining the SMS (Safety Management System) & EMS (Emergency Management System) procedures for hazard identification, risk assessment and determination of necessary controls with the Management Team in accordance with Company Policy
  • Responsible for delivering development projects of varying size and complexity; to include directing, organizing and controlling project activities & Continuous Improvements (CI), under the direction of Management
  • Responsible for ensuring all products and/or services meet the established standards of quality, including reliability, usability and performance, as set forth by the Company and ISO 9001 standards; to include maintenance of equipment, maintenance calendars, purchasing & contacting vendors.

 

Qualifications

 

Required Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Safety Science, engineering, Industrial Hygiene or related discipline from an accredited College or University, or an equivalent combination of education & experience
  • 4 - 8+ years of experience in a production and/or manufacturing environment, excellent technical knowledge in the steel, mining, industrial, recycling or maintenance repair industry, to include Supervisory experience
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, including ability to effectively communicate with internal and external customers, extremely organized
  • Excellent computer proficiency (MS Office – Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook)
  • Must be able to work under pressure and meet deadlines, while maintaining a positive attitude and providing exemplary customer service
  • Ability to work independently and to carry out assignments to completion within parameters of instructions given, prescribed routines, and standard accepted practices
  • Strong analytical skills, exceptional judgment, dependable, excellent teamwork skills, good time management skills, able to delegate, creative, problem-solving, hardworking & persistent, professional competence, proactive
  • Maintains good public relations by displaying an attitude of dedication, courtesy and professional competence that will be recognized as such by customers (internal and external)
  • Bilingual in both official languages, orally & written
  • Current/active driver’s license

 

Preferred Education & Experience:

  • Master’s Degree in Safety Science, engineering, Industrial Hygiene or related discipline from an accredited College or University, or an equivalent combination of education & experience
  • 8+ years of safety experience in a production and/or manufacturing environment within the steel, mining, industrial, recycling or maintenance repair industry, to include Supervisory experience
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP)
