The Manufacturing Operations Chemist is primarily responsible for evaluating current and new raw materials through research, analysis, synthesis and experimentation on substances used in the manufacturing of our products as well as identifying and resolving material related processing issues to ensure compliance with customer requirements and product specifications.


Key responsibilities for this position include:

  • Provides daily technical support to Manufacturing to achieve and maintain the highest product quality standards with the most effective mix of raw materials.
  • Coordinates objectives and works closely with Technical Group to maximize product reliability and minimize costs by investigating the use of new and alternative raw materials.
  • Analyzes compounds to determine chemical and physical properties, composition, structure, relationships and reactions using chromatography, spectroscopy and spectrophotometry techniques.
  • Recommends potential improvements or changes to methods or operations as appropriate.  Works to increase efficiency in plant processes while reducing waste where possible.
  • Conducts root cause investigations and analysis for off specification results; working with Manufacturing and Technical Group to implement corrective actions. Prepares well documented reports of results.
  • Works with Technical Group and I & T (Innovation and Technology) to provide smooth transition from lab work to production trials then to commercialization of new products and processes.
  • Works closely with Quality to investigate and resolve customer complaints.
  • Provides off-shift coverage on low yield products or Process Improvement and I & T Trials.
  • Reviews/Responds to Sales Quick Response Inquiries, generates finished product cost estimates, sets up product structures/formulations and Bill of Materials that are maintained in Oracle ERP. 
  • Plans, performs and documents non-routine tests (or special studies) and investigations.
  • Maintains and improves proficiency of technical skills through training. 
  • Provides technical leadership and expertise for process and quality teams.  Actively supports Lean Sigma and Kaizen activities throughout the organization.
  • Performs above duties in both Wooster, OH and Bristol, TN locations, traveling between plants when necessary.


This position requires:

Bachelor's degree (BS) or MS degree in polymer science, chemistry or plastics technology with 10 + years of demonstrated experience with PVC compounding.  Other desired experience includes: knitting, weaving, fabric, textile experience, adhesive development experience, top coat compound development - top coats, lacquers, paints, project management experience, and manufacturing experience.
