The 2nd officer has the following overall responsibilities:

·        Compliance with the Company’s MS requirements related to the position;

·        Handling and maintenance of the GMDSS;
 

·        Attend the safekeeping of a navigation watch at sea as delegated by the Master;

·        Monitor all Notice(s) to Mariners, and inform the Master if Notice(s) to Mariners are not received as scheduled;

·        Ensure all charts for the current voyage are corrected up to the latest Notice(s) to Mariner’s and Navigation warnings;

·       Consult with the Master and prepare passage plans before sailing;

·        Ensure all charts are correctly filed in the appropriate folio, and that old charts are suitably disposed of, and not stored on the bridge;

·         Ensure that all relevant nautical publications are kept up to date, and corrected;

·        Ensure that all navigational instruments including electronic navigational aids, lights and signals are properly maintained, tested and functioning correctly;
