Our program, Camp Harkness, gives people with disabilities a traditional overnight summer camp experience with swimming, crafts, sports, music, dances, campfires, and more, all by a gorgeous beach on the Connecticut shoreline. We have weeks for young adults (16-21) and for adults (all ages). We work closely as a team and train everyone at the beginning of the summer on how to care for our campers and help them have the best time.   

   

The Summer Camp Nurse at Oak Hill’s Waterford location works June 3rd to August 9th. Nurses are expected to stay at camp from Sunday morning – Friday evening for these weeks. This is a traditional, overnight summer camp   

   

The Summer Camp Nurse manages the general operations of the Infirmary including medication administration, first aid, and all necessary documentation and reporting. As part of the Leadership Team, they assist with all camp supervision. 

  

Minimum Requirements:   

  • RN or LPN with current CT license and experience providing nursing services. 
  • Valid driver’s license.  
  • Ability to organize and supervise small group activities in a recreational setting.  
  • Communication, organization, technical, leadership, problem solving, and supervisory skills.

Staff are eligible for a stipend for the entire program, paid bi-weekly throughout the summer camp season.   

    

Responsibilities:    

  • Provide direction and oversight for the medical components of campers consistent with state regulation, guardians, physicians, and other consulting medical staff as appropriate.
  • Coordinate and deliver nursing care procedures and related health activities such as medication administration/supervision, treatments, assessments, personal care activities, and clearing campers for general health status.
  • Maintain ongoing, cooperative communication with caregivers and camper physicians.
  • Maintain proper documentation for dispensing medication and treatment information.
  • Order medical supplies in accordance with state regulations.
  • Assist with Pre-Camp and Staff Orientation. Train and supervise staff in relation to specific medical needs of campers, personal care, infection control, diabetes, wellness, etc. Participate in developing and carrying out medically specific individualized plans.
  • Work with the Leadership Team to facilitate Check-In and Check-Out days, general policies and procedures for staff and campers, and assistance calls from staff.
  • When necessary, administer CPR and First Aid procedures.
  • Implement emergency procedures in the event of a fire or weather event. Use initiative and good judgement in emergencies where policies and procedures may not be specified.
  • Use least intrusive methods during situations with a risk of injury such as the need for Physical and Psychological Management Training (PMT).
  • Exercise relevant safety measures during transportation.
  • Fulfill additional duties and responsibilities as determined by the Leadership Team.
