Professional Engineer (Water Conveyance) 

Section 1 – Position Summary

 

The Water Conveyance Professional Engineer functions in an Operations role in the Water Department. Our core mission is to dependably provide high quality wholesale water to over 80 delivery points via 20 major pump stations and over 700 miles of pipeline ranging up to 96-inches in diameter. The Professional Engineer position works under the direction of the Water Conveyance System Manager and fills critical roles in our organization related to the condition assessment and renewal of existing infrastructure, as well the review of design plans for new infrastructure.  The Professional Engineer also supports system management by planning and coordinating changes in operation to successfully connect new infrastructure and maintain current assets.

 

Section 2 – Major Responsibilities

 

  1. Manage the Linear Asset Management Program to assess the condition of water pipe and valves and identify and prioritize repairs.
  2. Plan and coordinate changes to normal conveyance system operations (i.e. shutdowns). Interface with the Water Treatment Operations Engineer to coordinate operational changes that have impacts to both treatment and conveyance.
  3. Participate in engineering design meetings, studies and construction progress meetings, and review design reports, plans and specifications to represent the needs of operations and maintenance.
  4. Serve as project manager for assigned projects and studies in the Water Division.
  5. Collect and compile water system information to inform operational decisions and support other District departments.
  6. Evaluate technologies, processes and equipment for potential use in water projects.

 

Section 3 – Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

 

  1. Proficiency in use of Microsoft Office Suite of products including Word, Excel and Powerpoint. Prior experience or familiarity with scheduling, modeling software, and/or design software platforms such as Autocad preferred.
  2. Ability to maintain positive and productive relationships, and communicate clearly with internal and external stakeholders.
  3. Understanding of basic water system hydraulics, condition assessment technologies, materials, principles and processes preferred.
  4. Action oriented, supportive and positive problem solver.

 

Section 4 – Education and Experience

 

  1. Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or other related field received from an accredited college or university.
  2. Professional Engineering Registration in the State of Texas.
  3. Experience with reading and interpreting technical documents, including pipeline construction documents.
  4. Requires a valid Texas Driver's License.

 

Section 5 – Environmental Factors, Activity Levels and Equipment

 

Moderate physical labor and considerable mental attention required with some eyestrain. Generally desirable conditions with some outside visits to work-sites with varying environmental conditions. Considerable time can be spent working with and viewing a computer screen. Considerable time viewing plans, specifications and reading reports and correspondence. Some time will be spent at construction sites, traversing rough terrain, climbing stairs and ladders to access structures. Equipment used includes calculators, computers and some field survey equipment.
