Chief Medical Examiner

Full-Time, Salary
Salary Range: $196,934.40 - $299,208.00/yr
Job Summary: To provide timely, accurate and legally defensible determination of the cause and manner of death and to enhance public health and safety through the incidents of preventable deaths.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Perform autopsies in a timely manner.
- After reviewing autopsy findings and case histories for completeness and assigning or pursuing additional investigative work, assign cause and manner of death.
- Order and interpret special laboratory tests, including toxicology analyses, microbiology and serology, radiology or other tests to determine cause and manner of death.
- Provide court testimony regarding autopsy and investigative findings and act as expert witness as to injury and/or disease.
- Generate timely written and photographic documentation in support of medical and investigative procedures and findings.
- Provide formal and informal lectures to medical students, college students and staff, including in-service presentations and community presentations.
- Attend numerous community functions and meeting representing the Medical Examiner’s Office – board member of numerous not-for-profit organizations (e.g., Wisconsin Donor Network, NAME, Medical Society).
- Direct the Medical Examiner’s office.
- Regular attendance is required.
- Other duties as assigned.
Required Education & Years of Experience: Doctor of Medicine Degree; including a Pathology residency and a one (1) year fellowship in Forensic Pathology with five (5) or more years of experience conducting autopsies.
Required Licenses/Certifications
- Unrestricted Medical Licensed Physician in good standing in the state of Wisconsin.
- Board Certified by the American Board of Forensic Pathology.
- Wisconsin Driver’s License
Required Skills and Abilities
- Ability to operate PC’s, bone saw, scalpel, syringe, scissors, needles, camera, microscope.
- Current driver’s license required.
- Initiates contact that requires a high degree of authority in securing understanding and cooperation of multiple departments or interests.

- Contacts across departments or divisions with employees involving persuasion of others, absent formal authority, to conform to a policy interpretation or recommended course of action.
- Contact with peers and others involving explanation of information (these contacts may be within or outside the department or division), and the gathering of factual information. May include the communication of sensitive or confidential information.
- External contact involving the initiation and maintenance of relationships that can have a significant effect on the success of the organization.
- Read, write and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence and memos as well as interpretation of safety rules, operating/maintenance instructions and procedure manuals.
- Prepare and/or present written communications that pertain to controversial and complex topics.
- Write routine reports, correspondence, and speak effectively before both internal and external groups.
- Read, analyze and interpret business manuals, technical procedures and/or government regulations, scientific and technical journals, financial reports and legal documents.
- Primary work responsibility involves the long-range future including the scope, direction and goals of the organization.
- Typically difficult or complex work; generally governed by broad instructions objectives usually involving frequent changing conditions and problems.
- Work requires the ability to plan and perform work in light of new or constantly changing problems, work from broad instruction, and deal with complex factors not easily evaluated. Decisions require considerable judgment, initiative and ingenuity in areas there is little precedent.
- Work requires the ability to act independently in the formulation and administration of policies and programs for major departments or functions.
- Knowledge of all related computer and software application such as word processing and spreadsheets.
- Scheduling, supervision, and evaluation of work as a superior of others.
Working Conditions
- Physical Demands: Standing, Walking/Running, Sitting, Reaching, Bending/Kneeling, Hearing, Talking, Visual, Typing as well as both Fine and Manual dexterity. Lift and carry up to 50 lbs.; push and pull up to 100 lbs.
- Non-Physical Demands: Analysis/Reasoning, Communication/Interpretation, Math/Mental Computation, Reading, Sustained Mental Activity and Writing.
- Environmental Demands: Frequent Task Changes, Tedious/Exacting Work, High Volume Public Contact, and Dust.
- Demands/Deadlines: Requires frequent, substantive contacts with people in highly stressful situations; delicacy and unpredictability of contacts creates considerable strain or heavy stress regularly.
Note: This unclassified position is open to all qualified applicants authorized to work in the United States. The incumbent must establish residency in Wisconsin within six (6) months of appointment and maintain such residency throughout their incumbency.
