Payroll Specialist

Hourly Pay Rate: $22.70 - $25.93

Job Summary: The principal purpose of the Payroll Specialist is to process payroll in a timely and accurate manner. This position maintains Milwaukee County Payroll records and assists employees in regard to addressing employee payroll questions and/or concerns.

 

Job Duties:

  • Inputs payroll corrections and supplemental pays in the time, attendance and payroll systems. Monitor timesheets for accuracy of time collection and pay adjustments. Audit time sheets for short hours, off time use and FML
  • Processes bi-weekly payroll for all Milwaukee County employees in an accurate and timely manner. Audits and verifies payroll results prior to acceptance of payroll checks.
  • Assists field personnel with payroll concerns related to HR/PR and Time and Attendance software.
  • Inputs and monitors tax changes for State and Federal withholding. Maintains paper files as necessary and updates exempt files yearly.
  • Monitors and approves entry of direct deposits, ensuring compliance with mandatory direct deposit requirements.
  • Monitors and answers Central Payroll, Ceridian and personal email account questions.
  • Inputs and monitors union due withholdings and prepares union reports as required. Reconciles employee deductions for UPAF, United Way, and Parking etc.
  • Prepares corrections for manual checks as necessary to ensure that employees are paid in an accurate and timely manner. Provide back-up to other Payroll Staff when needed.
  • Maintains an up-to-date knowledge on all aspects of payroll, including but not limited to earnings and deduction codes, changes in union contracts, changes in Ordinance, and changes in State and Federal laws that affect payroll.

 

Minimum Experience & Education:

  • High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalent.
  • At least (1) or more years of experience processing payroll.
  • Focused and detail-oriented individual who can handle stressful situations. 
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills are required.

 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: Knowledge of the practices and procedures of payroll processing; knowledge of basic bookkeeping methods; knowledge of Federal and State tax laws; skill in Microsoft Office Suite; strong oral and written communication skills; ability to work independently; ability to operate a personal computer; ability to read and understand written materials; ability to accurately perform work under deadline pressures; and ability to work effectively and harmoniously with others. The ability to push/pull and lift/carry up to 20lbs.
