Port Engineer

SUMMARY: Bering Marine Corporation provides charter and scheduled service throughout Alaska with their fleet of tugs and barges, landing crafts and hovercraft. The Port Engineer is essentially responsible for the maintenance, repairs & regulatory compliance of all BMC vessels and equipment as necessary.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
- Schedule, coordinate & oversee dockside and/or shipyard maintenance and repairs of BMC vessels.
- Acts as shore side engineering support for the vessel engineers
- Orders & ships parts as necessary to different parts of Alaska
- Oversees and directs others to perform routine maintenance of vessel, deck and cabin areas to include cleaning, painting and minor repairs.
- Responsible for overall mechanical functions of the vessel and its components.
- Coordinates with vessel engineers and oversees the mechanical functions and repairs of the vessel.
- Manages vessel and fleet engineers and ensures they are capable of duties
- Works with AML engineering group with yearly maintenance of vessels
- Acts as liaison and point of contact between BMC operations and AML Marine Maintenance
- Ensures safety of crew of vessel and upholds the safety policies of the Company. Participates in safety meetings and assists with JSA’s and other reporting conditions
- Works with Marine Manager to ensure vessels engineering staff is properly crewed.
- Functions as Alt/DPA for Safety Management System
- Performs other duties as instructed by Vice President including special projects
- Acts as Owner’s Representative during shipyard and maintenance periods
- Teamwork is a must
- Ability to travel to remote locations on short notice.
- Must have the ability to understand and operate typical vessel systems.
- May be required to ride vessels if needed.
QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
High School diploma or GED preferred. At least 5 years of marine engineering experience required. Alaska experience preferred. Towing Vessel experience preferred. Project management and planning experience preferred. Basic to advanced keyboard skills along with experience using Microsoft Office applications such as Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret technical procedures, governmental regulations, and safety regulations. Ability to write reports and accurately record information into vessel records. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from managers, crew, customers, and the general public.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.
REASONING ABILITY:
Ability to use common sense and sound judgment to deal with situations and multiple problems that occur simultaneously in a highly controlled and regulated environment. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
Minimum Requirements
Engineering License Preferred, engineering experience may be substituted.
Merchant Marine Document
STCW Endorsement preferred
TWIC Card required
Current CG Physical Card required
Driver’s license-preferred
Passport preferred
OTHER QUALIFICATIONS:
Must be available to work days, evenings, weekends, nights or holidays and to be away from home for extended periods of time. Must be able to work in a team environment in close quarters for extended periods of time. Must have good interpersonal skills and be able to get along well with various types of personalities, backgrounds, etc.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to stand; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk or hear and smell. The employee is frequently required to walk. The employee must regularly lift and /or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. Lift and launch life raft, don a survival suit in a reasonable amount of time unassisted.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; outside weather conditions; extreme cold; extreme heat; risk of electrical shock; explosives and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
COMMENTS:
Post-conditional offer of employment drug test is required. Random drug testing is required of all employees.
