Intern – Energy Market Design Analyst
Department – Market Development
Minimum Education Level: PhD
Preferred Majors: Economics
Who we are:
ISO New England is one of the most pivotal energy companies you’ve probably never heard of. Our job is to oversee the 24/7 operation of the power grid that covers the six-states of New England and to administer the region’s $10+ billion “stock exchange” for buying and selling of wholesale electricity. Our work ensures that over 14 million people can reliably turn their lights on and complete their jobs, take care of their families, and live in comfort with convenience.
Department description:
Market Development is responsible for the region's wholesale electricity market designs. Our work is project-based and involves analyzing and improving upon the region's suite of auction-based wholesale markets. We work collaboratively within the group and with other parts of the organization, where our group includes PhD economists and analysts with backgrounds in business, economics, finance, and engineering.
What will you be working on:
This economist intern would work closely with the Market Development group to assess a key market design question. Put the many concepts taught in graduate school into practice where it will impact the multi-million dollar electricity markets.
How will you make an impact:
The intern will be exposed to the work we do at the ISO. This exposure can inspire research ideas and also highlight an important and fulfilling potential career path outside of academia.
What we look for in a candidate:
Currently pursuing a PhD in economics or a related field. An ideal candidate would study a field that is closely related to the work the economist team does at the ISO, such as energy economics, microeconomic theory, industrial organization, environmental economics, public policy, and/or econometrics.
To be eligible for the internship candidate must have completed at least the first year of college and be currently enrolled in a four year or graduate-level academic program. Candidates must have the authority to work in the US on a permanent basis, without requiring sponsorship.
