Intern – Transmission Adequacy and Reliability Assessment (TARA) Analyst
Department – Long Term Outage Coordination
Minimum Education Level: Senior
Preferred Majors: Computer Science or Electrical Engineering
Who we are:
ISO New England is one of the most pivotal energy companies you’ve probably never heard of. Our job is to oversee the 24/7 operation of the power grid that covers the six-states of New England and to administer the region’s $10+ billion “stock exchange” for buying and selling of wholesale electricity. Our work ensures that over 14 million people can reliably turn their lights on and complete their jobs, take care of their families, and live in comfort with convenience.
System Operations & Market Administration oversees New England's power grid and ensures its day-to-day reliable and economic operation. The department's primary functions are: forecasting New England's electricity use, balancing minute-to-minute electricity supply and demand, dispatching the power system, coordinating transmission and generation outages, and maintaining required operating reserves.
What will you be working on:
This intern will primarily help with development and enhancement of the TARA software which is used to thermally evaluate transmission outages. These evaluations aim to maximize reliability, while minimizing economic impacts to the system. These enhancements to the TARA software will minimize manual study efforts that are needed to be performed by the Outage Coordinators at ISO-NE. Further expansion of additional software tools used by the team will be explored, and automation of tasks will be a focus for this candidate as well.
How will you make an impact:
This intern will attain a high-level conceptual understanding of how ISO-NE operates the regional power grid. In addition, this candidate will also gain comprehensive experience within the Outage Coordination groups at the ISO which will include process flow, software use and system impacts. The candidate will be able to put their skills to the test by playing an integral part in further development of the TARA software.
What we look for in a candidate:
Software programming experience (Python, VBA, R software or the like)
Familiarity with database programming and SQL
Fluency with Microsoft Excel, Word and PowerPoint
Knowledge or experience with PI, PowerFlow, PowerWorld, PSSE, TARA or the like is desired but not required
To be eligible for the internship candidate must have completed at least the first year of college and be currently enrolled in a four year or graduate-level academic program. Candidates must have the authority to work in the US on a permanent basis, without requiring sponsorship.
