Job outline:

  • Identify relevant online conversations, media ecosystems, and calls-to-action which might elevate risk to our client’s operations in multiple cities and towns throughout Eastern and Southern Africa, specifically Tanzania, Uganda and South Africa. Analyze all relevant media, [social] media, and communications that have social/political implications in ongoing and emerging threat profiles that intersect with our client’s operations.
  • Assess and measure risk in digital communities, online ecosystems, and communications networks calling for disruption across multiple cities and towns in Tanzania, Uganda and South Africa. 
  • Harvest data and prioritize insights from multiple innovation and tech platforms currently in service by GardaWorld regionally and globally — with a focus on misinformation, disinformation, calls-to-action or violence, and upcoming disruptions. Produce weekly, monthly, and quarterly assessment reports.
  • Respond to RFIs: up to 6 x per month.

Competencies:

  • Advanced understanding of threat/risk indicators in Tanzania, Uganda and South Africa.
  • Advanced understanding of the socio-economic and political situation driving disruption and unrest across Tanzania, Uganda and South Africa.
  • Advanced understanding of media culture in Tanzania, Uganda and South Africa, including online, social, and broadcast, communications.
  • Advanced understanding of regional and global media trends, specifically those on major social media channels, including Twitter, Facebook, Reddit, Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, and LinkedIn.
  • Ability to generate written analysis and assessment products that prioritize insights from multiple threat/risk profiles in media and communications ecosystems throughout Tanzania, Uganda and South Africa.
  • Experience with some aspect of digital communications is required; experience with social listening tools is a definite bonus.
  • The ability to write clearly and concisely in English to a wide audience.

  • Advanced understanding of Microsoft Office — specifically PowerPoint.

  • The ability to manage and prioritize multiple ongoing projects.

Experience and Education:

  • A bachelor’s degree in international relations, Political Science, Security Studies, or a related field.
  • 1-3 years in a relevant analytical field, including threat/risk or media/communications preferably with a focus on African geopolitical and security issues.
  • Familiarity with the specific challenges and dynamics of the South African context and its neighboring regions.
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills, with the ability to process complex information and provide clear, actionable insights.
  • Proficiency in intelligence analysis software and tools.
  • Advanced computer literacy, including Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to present complex information in a clear and concise manner.
  • Detail-oriented with a strong commitment to accuracy.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Adaptable and able to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
