The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), the nation’s most effective animal protection organization, is seeking a Program Manager for the Wildlife Protection department.   The primary purpose of this position is to provide scientific, policy, and general support and leadership to further the mission, goals and objectives of the wildlife campaign and department.

You will be responsible for:

Leading campaign efforts on an assigned focus area of section, and coordinating with other departments and state directors to respond and advance legislative and rulemaking initiatives in that focus area;
Providing scientific, policy and general support, as needed, on wildlife protection issues for the section;
Managing the Wildlife Protection department intern program, including the posting of open intern positions, interviewing intern applicants, onboarding new interns, and supervising interns and their assigned tasks;
Responding to member/non-member requests and inquiries;
Monitoring and understanding opposition publications, positions, and tactics. Making recommendations to respond;
Monitoring and triaging wildlife-related legislative and regulatory actions and current organizational priorities related to assigned wildlife protection campaign. Consulting with appropriate staff and making recommendations for HSUS wildlife action;
Assisting in the development of the organization’s message, goals, strategy and materials relating to assigned wildlife protection campaign;
Developing and maintaining key relationship with external and internal wildlife protection stakeholders relating to assigned wildlife protection campaign;
Supporting federal affairs, regulatory affairs and state directors on wildlife issues.
Developing or coordinating with appropriate staff to supply research, briefing documents, organizational comments, talking points, and assistance developing testimony;
Performs other duties or responsibilities, as assigned. 

Qualifications and Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience in social/natural science or related field required;
A minimum of five (5) years of experience in public policy or campaign implementation required;
Comfortable in a fast-paced environment with frequent deadlines; high energy, self-motivated and proactive;
Strong written and verbal communication skills;
Ability to work both independently and as an effective team member in a team environment;
Strong knowledge of Microsoft Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook);
Ability to multitask and be flexible with regard to workload and assignments;
Ability to exercise sound judgment;
Attention to detail and commitment to excellence, demonstrated by the delivery of quality and timely outcomes;
Strong interest in animal protection issues preferred.
 
This position is based in the DC Metro Area – Remote Eligible.
