Trending Sports Reporter
The Austin American-Statesman/statesman.com, part of the USA TODAY NETWORK, is looking for a tenacious, energetic trending sports reporter to cover a wide range of sports coverage throughout the greater Austin area – one of the nation’s premier markets for high school sports talent and college football.
The reporter will spot rising trending topics and quickly create stories based on high interest opportunities to reach new audience and encourage loyal readers to subscribe. The reporter must also be adept with social media platforms, particularly Twitter and Instagram, as a news-gathering tool and to inspire alternative story forms. The reporter will cultivate trust within the community by interacting with readers, promoting content and diversifying sourcing. Occasionally, the reporter will also assist with coverage on other beats.
We’re looking for a self-starter, resourceful reporter with strong news judgement and the ability to swiftly write precise, error-free stories. The ideal candidate will measure success by comparing and evaluating key audience metrics to determine which stories resonate with readers and use that data to identify key takeaways and strategize on future story opportunities. You will also get to work alongside some of the best sports journalists in the country.
Responsibilities:
- Primary focus will be on trending sports coverage, including high school, college, and professional sports across Austin and statewide.
- Be a curious, assertive, and self-starting journalist who jumps to report on breaking news and trending topics with urgency.
- Capitalize on live, breaking, and trending moments by creating quick-turn-around content for social media and other digital platforms.
- Monitor Google Trends, Dataminr and other search tools for hot topics and moments with rising interest.
- Proficient on the latest social media tools and trends, specifically on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram, to generate interest in and promote content.
- Optimize, aggregate and package content for digital publication. Enhance content with video, galleries, SEO meta-data, hyperlinks and images.
- Use metrics to monitor real-time story/content performance, determine digital readership/traffic patterns and make changes in content tied to the data. Familiarity with Parse.ly and analytics products a plus.
- Work collaboratively as part of a team with other reporters and editors.
- Contribute and assist in creating newsletters to send to our audience and encourage them to sign up through innovative promotional plans.
- Occasionally, fill in on other beats to assist in coverage of breaking news and other tent-pole events.
Requirements:
- Bachelor's or higher in communications, journalism or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Two years of news writing experience, preferred.
- Outstanding core journalism skills, including writing, spelling, grammar, and AP style.
- Sound news judgment and a flair for effective headline writing.
- Strong planning and organizational skills, and ability to coordinate with staff members across all departments.
- Ability to multitask and excel under deadline pressure.
- Understanding and adherence to journalism ethics.
- This role will include night, weekend and occasional holiday work as needed by the news cycle.
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) candidates preferred.
- This role requires a valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, and the minimum liability insurance required by state law.
- Employment is contingent on passing a post-offer pre-employment background check, motor vehicle record check & drug screen.
We are eager to learn more about you and how you fit this role. When you apply, don’t limit your upload to a resume; show us what you’ve done. To do so, put together a single document file that includes the following, in this order:
