The Ledger in Lakeland, FL,, part of the USA TODAY NETWORK, is looking for a self-motivated reporter to become the recognized voice on education in Polk County, Florida.

Polk County, in the heart of Central Florida between Tampa and Orlando, is among the largest school systems in the nation, serving a county with more than 700,000 residents and 100,000 school children. In addition to Polk County Public Schools, the county contains two charter school systems and multiple individual charter and private schools.

The education reporter will primarily cover the nuts and bolts of K-12 public education, such as teacher contracts, health care, school grades, standards, etc. In addition, the reporter will cover human stories, such as how parents, teachers and students cope with public policy on things such as school safety, book bans, classroom discussions on race and sexuality, etc. The education reporter also keeps an eye on charter schools and, when necessary, private schools. The ideal candidate is an investigative reporter at heart who has the skills to dig into an issue but also the storytelling ability to break it down to the personal level. Candidates should be adept at source development, have experience using public records, databases and other digital-focused tools; bring a rock-solid knowledge of AP style; and demonstrate a proven ability to meet daily and long-range deadlines. The reporter must be able to tell stories across multiple platforms, using digital tools such as video, audio and social. On occasion, the reporter must cover stories outside of education.

This job is based in Lakeland, Florida, and covers all of Polk County. Candidates must be able to work in Polk County. Previous governmental reporting and at least three years of experience at a daily newspaper or equivalent media are preferred. Spanish is a plus.
