The Burlington Free Press is seeking a journalist who will be a key leader, a mentor, and a coach in our newsroom. A dedication to

transparency and accountability is key, as well as an eye for meaningful enterprise and watchdog stories with a focus on solutions. We are looking for a journalist with a passion for storytelling who puts the readers first.


Job Details:

This editor will be a member of the newsroom leadership team overseeing a revolving team of reporters covering a variety of beats with a focus on Chittenden County first, home to more than a quarter of the state’s population and the core of the Vermont economy. This editor will guide reporters from idea to publication to deliver stories that engage on key issues and interests within the community. This will mean working with reporters to hone ideas into stories with a clear focus that address elements that are meaningful and help grow our subscriber base. The right candidate will place an importance on growing the Free Press’ digital audience through engaging content, effective use of social media, SEO and trends garnered from metrics.


Typical Job Duties:

  • Oversee a revolving team of reporters.
  • Work with the regional planner and digital optimization team to maximize readership and engagement for each story.
  • Be a teacher and mentor, not just an editor.
  • Help the staff hone skills in a wide range of storytelling: from real time digital updates to narrative storytelling, employing alternative story forms and multimedia.
  • Use metrics and analytics to determine how to best reach and grow the audience.
  • Increase digital audience and engagement and grow digital subscriptions.
  • Be courageous about experimentation.
  • Be a team player who likes to collaborate with coworkers.
  • Be an ambassador and advocate for the Free Press in the community.
  • Assures daily work is completed on time and efficiently, sets priorities and coordinates with other supervisors.

  • Writes news articles for publication and coaches a team of front-line journalists. When reporting, when editing, assigns and edits articles for context, completeness, fairness, accuracy, balance, and adherence to news values. Demonstrates strong news judgment in the selection, prioritization and editing of content.
  • Writes effective digital headlines, social media posts, briefs and breaking news alerts that help attract audiences.
  • Uses metrics to monitor and respond to real-time data. Manages workflow to meet deadlines.


Knowledge and Skills: 

  • journalist committed to values of fairness, diversity, inclusion, and professionalism.
  • Strong writing skills and a command of grammar and style.
  • Strong story and word editor.
  • Knowledge of data-based reporting and use of spreadsheets such as Excel.
  • Experience with social media, including Instagram Stories, as a tool to build audience and as a source for beat development.
  • Experience with and interest in multimedia, including video and podcasting.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with others locally and regionally to meet common goals.
  • As editor considers reader interest and reader questions in helping reporters frame stories, utilizing tools such as Google Trends and Parsley.Th
  • This editor oversees reporters in the newsroom and reports to the executive Free Press editor. This editor may at times collaborate with other USA Today Network regional editors, reporters, and other Gannett New England newsrooms.
  • Top-notch planning, organizational and time management skills.
  • Understanding of metrics, social media, and SEO.
  • Self-motivation and self-direction.
  • Ability to work as a member of a team.
  • Ability to multi-task and excel under deadline pressure in a rapidly changing environment.
  • Has solid news judgment.


Required Work Experience, Training, and Education:

  • Bachelor's or master’s degree in communications, journalism, marketing, or related field preferred or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 3-5 years of relevant work experience. Management/supervisory experience a plus.
