The Indianapolis Star/, a winner of last year’s Pulitzer Prize for national reporting and part of the USA TODAY NETWORK, has an immediate opening for a watchdog reporter to cover Indianapolis City Hall.

Indianapolis is a city of roughly 900,000. It is the economic, government and cultural center of Indiana. It is home to an award-winning Children's Museum, one of the most highly regarded airports in the United States, a burgeoning chef-driven dining scene with a vibrant downtown, a growing public transit system, two major professional sports franchises and the Indianapolis 500.

It also is a city that has suffered through years of increased homicides and struggles providing basic infrastructure such as streets, sidewalks and bus stops in its neighborhoods.

In short, Indianapolis is a city that provides a good quality of life for many but also has challenges for an enterprising journalist to delve into.

We are seeking a reporter with the savvy to pore over a city budget and the sense of justice to question the fairness of city spending, to identify who are the winners and losers and why that is. Yes, this is a city hall reporting position, but our intent is to focus less on council meetings and more on how the actions -- and inactions -- of those in power affect the quality of life for those in the community. It is our intent for stories to originate not just from news conferences or meeting agendas, but by speaking with neighborhood associations, business owners, residents and others whose concerns might not otherwise be covered.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate the ability to dig through public records and mine sources to report on matters of public importance, to hold Indianapolis government accountable and to tell engaging stories. The candidate will have the ability to write quick-turn daily stories and weekly enterprise and the ambition to pitch longer projects. And they will have strong news judgment.

The candidate should demonstrate a strong understanding of audience metrics, engagement tactics and search engine optimization.
