JOB SUMMARY:
Under general supervision, provides direct, technical nursing care functions in accordance with individual nursing care plans and/or as directed by attending physician/clinician. Takes vital signs, administers medications, records required information in patients'/consumers' charts, observes reactions and prepares patients/consumers for examinations as necessary. May function as a lead worker for other staff.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Performs direct patient/consumer care activities by administering medications, explaining medication(s) to patients/consumers and observing and recording patient/consumer responses and medication side effect(s); administers treatment as directed. Maintains an adequate supply of medications and regularly monitors to ensure medications have not expired. May perform health screenings.
  2. Assists the attending physician/clinician in the examination and treatment of patients/consumers, staff and applicants by obtaining necessary medical background information, taking patient's/consumer's vital signs and preparing patients/consumers for examination. May assist physician/clinician with minor surgical and other technical procedures as directed
  3. Maintains examination rooms, equipment and supplies to provide a clean and safe environment for patient/consumer care.
  4. Performs various administrative, clerical and documentation activities to support unit activities.
  5. Provides leadership and direction to assigned support staff by coordinating daily work assignments, assisting in new employee orientation and making recommendations to appropriate supervisory nurse regarding staff performance.
  6. Creates and maintains a high-performance environment characterized by positive leadership and a strong team orientation
  7. Participates in required in-service training and departmental meetings.
  8. Adheres to security rules of the facility
  9. Provides supportive counseling to individuals, groups or families to assist in identifying problem areas and provide direction towards effecting positive change.
  10. Completes patient/consumer preliminary psychosocial assessments based on interviews with patient/consumer, family, significant others and community agencies providing services.

Minimum Qualifications:
A Current Georgia license to practice as a Licensed Practical Nurse.

Preferred Training and Experience: 
Experience in Mental Health preferred.
