Under general supervision, to perform a variety of advanced skilled and technical work involved in the maintenance, operation, and repair of the water and sewer distribution system.




Exercises technical and functional supervision over lower level staff.




Perform jobs with minimum supervision in the maintenance of sewer lines; work sewer stops; install manholes and cleanouts; tap for customer services; perform meter maintenance; instruct utility and meter workers in these methods.


Inspect, maintain, and repair water mains and meters; locate and operate valves; load and flush new water mains and service lines.


Repair fire hydrants; perform fire hydrant flow test, perform water taps and set meters; turn water on and off.


Perform maintenance of lift stations and in areas of pumping and pump controls with building and ground maintenance including dismantling pumps, meters, valves, and transmission lines.


Operate sewer jet cleaning equipment, backhoes, dump trucks, loaders, and other vehicles and equipment necessary for operation and maintenance of the system.


Provide technical supervision to Utility Workers and Meter Workers.


Be available for standby assignment on a rotation basis.




Perform other job related duties and responsibilities as assigned.




Knowledge of:


Practices, methods, equipment, tools, and methods used in the repair and maintenance of a water and sewer system.


Operational characteristics of the City water and /or sewer distribution system.


           Safe driving principles and practices.


Skill to:


Operate a variety of tools and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of water and sewer system


Operate a motor vehicle safely.


Ability to:


           Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work, both internally and externally.

Experience and Training Guidelines:


Any combination equivalent to experience and training to provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be qualifying.  Knowledge, skills, and abilities may be obtained through:




Three (3) years of experience comparable to a Utility Worker II in the City of Abilene in the repair and maintenance of a water and sewer system is required.




A high school diploma or GED is required. 


          License or Certificate:


A Class A commercial driver’s license (CDL) is required.


Special Requirements:


Essential duties require the following physical skills and work environment:


Ability to sit, stand, walk, kneel, crouch, stoop, squat, and climb.


With or without accommodation, ability to lift 50 pounds.


Exposure to cold, heat, noise, outdoors, confining work spaces, chemicals, explosive materials, mechanical hazards, and electrical hazards.


Ability to travel to different sites.
