School Crossing Guard Lead - Temporary

Under general supervision, monitor the school crossing guards and if needed, provide safe crossing of City streets for Abilene school students.

This position functions as a lead over the School Crossing Guards.
Monitor crossing guards to ensure they follow proper guidelines and safety protocol set forth by the policy and procedures manual.
Communicate with crossing guards and address equipment needs and any concerns they may have concerning their work area.
Assist with the training of new crossing guards.
Coordinate with crossing guards as they need time off and arrange for an alternate to fill in for that time.
Fill in as an alternate as needed.
Report to the assigned crossing location at designated times.
Control school children while monitoring traffic for a safe crossing opportunity.
Physically occupy a crosswalk while school students cross the street.

Perform other job related duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Knowledge of:
The School Crossing Guard Policies and Procedures Manual.
Safe work practices as well as safety measures associated with directing traffic and pedestrians.

Principles and practices used in dealing with the public.
Skill to:
Be tactful while dealing with school crossing guards.
Demonstrate vision, hearing, and related reflexes necessary to perform job duties.
Ability to:
Learn, interpret, and apply pertinent traffic laws.

Work independently in the absence of supervision.

Understand and follow oral and written instructions.

Act quickly and calmly in emergencies.
Meet and deal tactfully and effectively with the public
Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work, both internally and externally.

Experience and Training Guidelines:

Any combination equivalent to experience and training to provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be qualifying.  Knowledge, skills, and abilities may be obtained through:
Previous crossing guard experience is preferred.
A high school diploma or GED is required.
License or Certificate:
 A valid Texas driver’s license; the ability to obtain one within ninety (90) days of employment, or a military waiver is required.
Special Requirements:
Essential duties require the following physical skills and work environment:
Work under the potential hazard of heavy traffic.
Safety and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) experience preferred.
Ability to stand, walk, run, and twist.

With or without accommodation, the ability to lift up to 5 pounds.

Exposure to noise, outdoors, and inclement weather.

Availability for flexible hours.
