Cable and Antenna Systems Technician

GC&E Federal is seeking a Cable and Antenna Systems Technician to join our team at Tyndall Air Force Base in Panama City, Florida. The candidate will be responsible for performing Outside Plant (OSP) and Inside Plant (ISP) cabling/wiring maintenance and installation of base owned communications cable systems.

Jobs Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Install copper and fiber optic cable as required by buried or underground methods.
  • Diagnose, locate, and repair troubles in cables, splices, and terminals. Use established procedures utilizing standard test equipment to include latest state-of-the-art equipment.
  • Make fiber splice connections by fusion splicing or mechanical methods as required. After splice has been completed tests conductors for continuity, adequate insulation, and other tests as required by standards.
  • Use equipment such as fusion splicers, fiber tools, connector kits, Optical Time Domain Reflectometers and other test equipment as required to complete assigned taskings.
  • Use and update engineered and installation project drawings, such as CIPS/CVC for conducting AF Form 103 dig permits, cable locates and cable identification.
  • Perform cable locates for underground cable which includes marking the cable via flags and paint to identify the cable path and protect it from being cut.
  • Install, remove/relocate, and troubleshoot connectivity to equipment including various routers, switches as required to support Local Area Networking on the Tyndall AFB computer systems. Install premise wiring and peripheral devices to provide voice and data connectivity in facilities where base services are required.
  • Install and maintain standard network cabling such as category 5e, 6 and 7, twisted pair, fiber optic cable and associated connectors to support both secure and non-secure networks.
  • Use test equipment such as Cable Scanners and Optical Time Domain Reflectometers/power meters for cable certification and troubleshooting of LANs and ISP fiber optic cables.   
  • Use copper cable test equipment to locate faults such as, but not limited to, opens, transpositions, shorts, crosses, and grounds in cables and makes repairs, as necessary. Makes continuity tests from terminal locations and splice points to ensure there are no breaks in the circuit. Identify cable pairs in working/nonworking cable using telephone test equipment to keep pairs in proper sequence.
  • Perform scheduled Preventive Maintenance Inspections (PMls), unscheduled maintenance, and repairs on various types of antennas.
  • This position is mission essential and may require working nonstandard duty shifts, periods of on-call status, remote (telework) duty, and/or duty during nights, weekends, or holidays.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Minimum high school diploma or equivalency.
  • Minimum DoD Secret Security Clearance.
  • Building Industry Consulting Service International (BICSI) Installer 2, Copper and Optical Fiber Cabling Installation Certifications or a minimum three (3) to five (5) years industry experience installing, maintaining, and troubleshooting copper and fiber inside/outside plant.
  • Experience and/or training should include copper and fiber optic termination, patch panel installation, and troubleshooting with OTDR, power meter, and LAN testers.

Physical Demands:

  • Heavy physical workload.
  • Sitting/Standing for extended periods of time.
  • Employee must be able to exert up to 50 pounds of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body.
  • Inspection of cables in floors, ceilings, maintenance holes and on towers/poles.
  • Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard, mouse, power tools, copper/fiber installation and test equipment, and to handle other computer and job related components.
  • Required to have close visual acuity to perform activities such as viewing a computer terminal, extensive reading and copper/fiber installation and test equipment.  
  • Specific physical requirements include, but are not limited to, stooping, kneeling, reaching, walking, crawling, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, talking, hearing, and performing repetitive motions.
