Backup DOT Driver

Position Summary:

Performs various task in shipping and receiving department to prepare outbound shipments and assist with receiving inbound freight. Responsible for transporting products between manufacturing and distribution divisions when primary driver is unavailable or on an as needed basis.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Utilizes computer-generated reports to stage and load orders accurately in preparation for prompt shipment. Verifies, documents, and slots shipments according to sales orders.
  • Selects and assembles orders from manufacturing inventory carefully verifying information and quantities. Places products on pallets, transfers to staging area and loads on truck.
  • Sorts and places materials on racks or shelves according to predetermined slot assignments and rotates product to ensure "First in - First Out".
  • Operates fork lift, pallet jack, or hand trucks to move product from one location to another.
  • Load and stack product on trucks in such a manner that the load is stable and product is secure to prevent damage.
  • Assist in warehouse maintenance and cleaning.
  • Complete daily pre-load and pre-trip inspection,
  • Fuel truck and reefer unit on a regular basis.
  • Double check transfer sheets and sales orders to ensure the delivery or pick-up is correct.
  • Verify with Shipping and Receiving Supervisor regarding any returns that need to be loaded and delivered back to manufacturing.
  • Responsible for washing inside of trailer out on a weekly and as needed basis.
  • Be familiar with the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) rules and regulations.
  • Perform sanitation duties in the freezer, cooler and warehouse.
  • Oversee and regulate flow of product in freezers, loading dock, and warehouse to ensure timely staging, loading and shipment of raw materials and/or finished goods.
  • Report mechanical problems, delays, accidents or other traffic situations to base location as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Education and/or Work Experience Requirements:

  • To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.   • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Valid Class "A" Commercial Driver's License required with at least 1 year of driving experience.
  • Basic math skills required
  • Preferably a "Motor Vehicle Record" with no major violations in the last 3 years
  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to safely and successfully perform the essential job functions consistent with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards, including meeting qualitative and/or quantitative productivity standards.
  • Ability to maintain regular, punctual attendance consistent with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards.
  • Must be able to lift and/or carry up to 75lbs.
  • Must be able to stand for long periods of time in wet and cold environment.
