HEAD OF COPY 
The Head of Copy oversees and directs the copy team and its projects on a daily basis. S/he sets strategy, messaging and voice, and provides creative direction to determine what is most effective for each project across print, video, online, email and merchandise. S/he is the team leader and directs the development of concepts and solutions to meet a campaign’s goals and drives the team toward the best possible creative solution.


The Head of Copy is responsible for directing and managing the copy team, as well as writing copy and campaigns for our own branded product lines. This is both a leadership role and a hands-on executional role. You will lead projects, collaborate and contribute as part of a team, and be an individual contributor.

   
The ideal candidate is a digital storyteller with experience that spans from content calendars to big production. A jack of all trades creative who can seamlessly switch channels, tasks, and tones without breaking a sweat. We are looking for someone who is willing to jump in to contribute and is eager to lift junior copywriters up through mentoring and constructive critiques. You’ve been on a few video and photoshoots in your career, and have experience wrangling concept decks and video edits that are due by EOD. You write a lot, and fast, while expertly balancing quality and quantity at every turn. You’re a strong teammate, a great communicator, and possess a strategic mind. You can make magic happen on landing pages and / or an email campaign and you fearlessly and faithfully represent the POV of your creative director, all the while bringing your own brilliant ideas to the table.


Beyond copy expertise, we are looking for someone with strong conceptual ability, who can articulate their creative decisions, ideate award-winning (and business generating) campaigns, and produce (mostly) digital work that engages with our different audiences. The ideal candidate will possess the perfect combination of leadership, creativity, and organization. They will work quickly and efficiently - never missing a deadline and ensuring deliverables are in line with – or exceed - expectations.


The Head of Copy works closely with the brand, performance marketing and merchandising teams, and reports into the Creative Director. They will directly manage a team of 4-5


About the Job:

  • Provide strategic copy and editorial direction and oversight of digital and physical consumer-facing content, including video, print and digital media, events, social, direct mail, email and TV 
  • Strategically interface cross departmentally to create content for wide-ranging campaigns on owned and third party channels
  • Evolve and define the brand voice and know it inside and out 
  • Research, concept and execute campaigns that engage with new and existing customers using current and emerging social trends
  • Experienced multi-tasker who can juggle multiple projects and tasks 
  • Oversee and approve the creation of all copy – campaign based and product based - to ensure that it reflects brand strategy, and resonates with the intended target audience
  • Work collaboratively across marketing and performance marketing departments
  • Deliver on-strategy and on-brand messages and ensure other writers are doing the same 
  • Craft engaging social content and copy 
  • Provide high level narratives and conceptual, big thinking 
  • Maintain and advise on current and future trends in content, journalism, and social to adjust and expand copy as needed
  • Act as a thought partner to the Creative Director
  • Utilize campaign metrics to refine content strategy and copy as necessary
  • Strong problem-solving and conceptual skills
  • Support Creative Director in managing day-to-day team duties and projects 
  • Ability to prioritize work and resources based on short and long-term needs
  • Motivate the team to create viral, award-winning, and results generating creative 
  • Partner with Creative Director to mentor and oversee junior creatives 

About You:

  • 8-10 years minimum proven experience producing strategic, copy driven campaigns
  • Experience setting creative and strategic direction, copywriting and copy editing, and managing a team of writers
  • Demonstrate ability to think strategically about the narrative and audience engagement
  • Must be detail-oriented with strong time management skills
  • Proven ability to lead teams of various sizes, while working in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong ability to incorporate data and research into copywriting
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Knowledge and understanding of SEO and social media platforms
  • Proven editorial and narrative skills with the ability to align messaging across multiple channels and platforms
  • Strong work ethic – goes the extra mile without being asked 
  • Confident, outgoing and engaging personality that adds to our culture and team 
  • A self-starter but has the ability to work well in a collaborative team environment 
  • Integrated experience in an Advertising or In-house Agency. Entertainment, Lifestyle, E-Commerce, Consumer marketing experience preferred
  • Detail oriented, but able to focus on the bigger picture 
  • Organized with diligent follow-through on every task assigned; does not need to be babysat
  • Experience in Digital Journalism background is a plus
  • Must be passionate about the outdoors
  • B.A. required. English or Journalism major preferred
