Peak Adventures’ purpose is to kindle personal growth, leadership, and connections through experiences in the outdoors.
 

ASI’s Peak Adventures is an outdoor adventure program dedicated to getting Sac State Students outside. Peak Adventures provides guided outdoor trips, low cost gear rentals, full service bike repair at The Bike Shop, summer youth camps and team building at The Challenge Center.

SUMMARY:

The Youth Camp Counselor I is responsible for the daily operations of any of the available Peak Adventures Youth Camps (rock climbing, caving, paddle boarding, white water rafting, games, arts and crafts and/or camping [Expedition Camp only].  The Youth Camp Counselor II is responsible for the daily operations of any of the available Peak Adventures Youth Camps (rock climbing, caving, paddle boarding, white water rafting, games, arts and crafts and/or camping [Expedition Camp only]. Counselors are responsible for the safety, instruction and participation of campers, ages 8-17 years old in games, arts & crafts and other camp activities.

 

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Youth Camp Counselor I/II:

  • Safely perform job duties and follow risk management procedures
  • Oversight of 10 – 25 campers per week.
  • Maintain the safety of the campers
  • Attend mandatory trainings related to the position including belay and games trainings offered at the Challenge Center
  • Oversee group dynamics of the campers and managing group cohesion.
  • Maintain camper behavior, discipline and enforce consequences; communicate with parents regarding camper behavior when necessary
  • Lead & facilitate games, arts and crafts and other camp activities.
  • Oversee camp snacks, keep track of dietary restrictions and practice good food handling.
  • Take pictures throughout camp week.
  • Clean-up and maintain camp room and supplies.
  • Teach and practice Leave No Trace (LNT).
  • Daily check-in and check-out of campers.
  • Perform first aid and take care of injuries, as needed.  Report and record details of incidents
  • Communicate needs and daily events with the Associate Director
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Youth Camp Counselor II:

  • Operate a 12 passenger van
  • Perform safety inspection on assigned vehicle to be used and notify supervisor of any vehicle deficiencies;
  • Follow all California State rules and regulations surrounding vehicle operation.
  • Other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Youth Camp Counselor I/II:

  • At least 18 years of age at the time of hire
  • Current driver license; licensed to operate a vehicle in the state of CA
  • Completion of the Peak Adventures  4-day Summer Camp Training May 30 - June 2, 2023
  • CPR and First Aid Certification (On-line certification not accepted)
  • Completion of belay training at the Peak Adventures Challenge Center before June 1, 2023
  • Ability to obtain a Wilderness First Aid Certification or higher (training provided on-site)
  • Availability to work Monday – Friday between the hours of 7:30 a.m. 5:30 p.m. June 12, 2023 August 6, 2023
  • Ability to maintain high positive energy, create a safe learning environment, and communicate professionally with campers;
  •  

    Youth Camp Counselor II:

    • Ability to obtain a Class C Driver’s License with a Passenger Endorsement prior to start of camp 6/12(training provided in house)
      • Meet ASI driving requirements

     

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

    • Experience leading games & facilitating activities
    • Experience belaying either indoors or outdoors
    • Water safety skills
    • Experience working with youth
    • Experience working in an outdoor setting
    • Experience with arts & crafts
    • Swift Water Rescue (on-site training available)

     

     

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, use hands to fingers, handle, feel, reach with hands and arms, talk and hear. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The employee must:

    Occasionally, lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

    • Must be able to climb, run, kneel, squat, reach overhead
    • Stand for extended periods of time
    • Wear a harness for an extended periods of time
    • Belay campers on the tower at the Peak Adventures Challenge Center

     

    WORK ENVIRONMENT (Choose one only)

    • Outdoors exposed to rain, heat and cold temperature for 10 hours a day
