The Resource Center has been providing services to persons with disabilities in the Chautauqua County area since 1958. From our humble beginnings as a gathering of parents and concerned citizens who wanted to provide educational and training opportunities for persons with developmental and intellectual disabilities, The Resource Center has grown into a comprehensive agency providing services to thousands of persons with all types and levels of disabilities.

The Resource Center is the largest non-governmental employer in Chautauqua County with more than 1,300 employees on its payroll.

REGISTERED NURSE- BEHAVIORAL HEALTH SERVICES

RESPONSIBLE TO:
Registered Nurse Supervisor, Behavioral Health

FUNCTION:
To provide for all aspects of psychiatric nursing care in the assigned behavioral health services
program(s) including treatment, support, advocacy and linkage to consumers within Behavioral Health
programming. To ensure currency of standards and effectiveness of treatment modalities through
ongoing assessments and documentation, health screenings, medication management program,
health/mental health related, individual/group treatment throughout Behavioral Health programming
needs.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Comprehensive knowledge of the assessment and treatment of illness and disease; general knowledge
of mental illness and related symptomology; knowledge of or ability to learn behavioral health group
therapy techniques and strategies, including the ability and willingness to conduct behavioral health
group therapy sessions; the ability to communicate effectively and in a timely manner both verbally and
in writing; must possess such qualities as self-direction, initiative, strong decision-making skills, the
ability to organize work and manage time efficiently, and the concepts of a team approach in caring for
an individual. Must possess adequate knowledge of computers, including willingness and ability to learn
and utilize electronic medical records-related programs and/or software. General knowledge of Infection
Control practices, as well as emergency and First Aid procedures. Must possess the ability to work well
with a variety of individuals, including clients, families, and others both within and outside of the
department and the organization. Physical condition or reasonable accommodation(s) commensurate
with the demands of the job.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
New York State Registered Professional Nurse License, or eligibility for New York State Licensure to
practice nursing as a Registered Professional Nurse. Psychiatric Registered Nurse, and/or professional
experience in a related behavioral health/chemical dependency field are strongly preferred.

REGISTERED NURSE/ BEHAVIORAL HEALTH SERVICES- APPENDIX
SPECIFIC DUTIES:
1. Coordinates doctors’ appointments and ensures follow-up of physicians’ recommendations.
2. Monitors clients’ medications as to accurate dosages and effectiveness.
3. Administers medications and provides for treatment of minor medical problems.
4. Performs initial intake and assessment/evaluation through the process of individual interview,
interview of significant others and review of previous records, if available, for the purpose of
gathering pertinent information to complete the assessment.
5. Develops a Treatment Plan to address specific identified needs which may include, but are not
limited to: psycho/social (interpersonal) skills, self-esteem, depression/suicidal ideation,
symptom control, anxiety and independent living skills.
6. Provides treatment interventions through individual, joint or group counseling.
7. Documents each client session and writes progress notes based on each client contact. Notes are
to include progress toward long- and short-term goals, changes in Treatment Plan and other
significant events.
8. Performs case management services for individuals within professional scope who are found to
need case management intervention. These services shall include, but are not limited to,
treatment and community referrals, advocacy, psycho-education and crisis intervention.
9. Serves as a coordinator of services for a caseload identified by the Behavioral Health Services
Program Management Team, including participation in Team Meetings, Assessments and
Treatment Plan formulation.
10. Provides specific assessments within scope and expertise to individuals enrolled in mental health
services.
11. Meets all quality and productivity standards as defines by management and regulatory / funding
entities.
12. Serves as an advocate for family members, legal/forensic support, and outreach and engagement
efforts.
13. Performs periodic evaluations to establish patient needs and determines how identified needs can
be met.
14. Acts as liaison with other agencies and departments mutually involved in the patient’s care.
15. Completes discharge paperwork within regulatory requirements.
16. Ensures that adequate emergency measures are developed and implemented. Is available for
walk-in appointments and/or emergent assessment as needed.
17. Works with other staff in developing and implementing education and training for individual
health concerns.
18. Completes Incident Reports, under the Direction of the Program Manager, and/or Director, for
NIMRS submission.
19. Maintain current nursing standards through appropriate in-service training.
20. Provides professional guidance to LPNs and RNs with lesser experience, and may direct other
staff in medical-related activities.
21. Takes part in teaching assigned in-services, medication certification classes and/or other trainings
as assigned by supervisor.
22. Serves on committees such as the Infection Control Committee, as needed or assigned.
23. Responsible for clients in the Medication Management Program which includes, but is not
limited to: tracking of the enrolled recipients, treatment plan development within the required
time frames, and monitoring of medication compliance and continued stability.

24. Works closely with the clinicians and treatment team as clients are entered into the program, or
as clients return to formal counseling upon the recommendation by the treating Psychiatrist and
team.
25. Responsible for conducting health assessments on all clients newly enrolled in program within
thirty (30) days of admission and annually thereafter.
26. Provide oversight of PRN medication(s), including but not limited to, maintaining current orders,
administering medications to clients, and documenting in client chart and PRN record book
dispensing of medications.
27. Maintain current supply of in date sample medications in a double locked cabinet. Ensure that
out of date samples are disposed of properly.
28. Performs all other related duties as needed or assigned.

TECHNICAL:
1. Maintains responsibility for confidential and time sensitive information through the use of
electronic management systems.
2. Effectively communicates with families, clients, staff and outside agencies via phone and
email in a professional and timely manner.
3. Utilizes Electronic Health Record System to effectively manage work completion and remain
within regulatory guidelines.
4. Updates monitoring tools, etc. using Microsoft Office Suite as necessary.
5. Notifies Behavioral Health Services Management Team in a timely manner of any regulatory
changes or updates.
6. Seeks, reviews and recommends relevant changes, updates and configurations as needed
through the appropriate channels.

OTHER:
1. Performs all other duties as needed or assigned.
